This week, The Bearded Vegans begin a multi-part exploration of all aspects ex-vegan. Polls indicate a high rate of vegan recidivism, that there are more ex-vegans on the planet than vegans. They want to examine the root causes of this phenomena, what we can do to prevent it, and discuss how the vegan movement's reaction to ex-vegans hurts or helps the cause. For the first installment, we dive into the world of the celebrity ex-vegan and the inevitable backlash their ex-vegan announcement causes. In this week's mini-episode Paul and Andy discuss a listener email that expressed frustration with vegan's tendency to constantly state how long they have been vegan during Q&A portions of a VegFest panel. Is this style of self-affirmation aspirational to others, merely annoying, or does it stoked the competitive "more vegan than thou" fire? In their first "mini" episode, Paul and Andy are looking at a recent story that claims vegans take twice as many sick days as their meat-eating counterparts. They'll do their best to look behind the headlines, separate fact from fiction and ultimately ask, even if this is true, does it really matter? This week The Bearded Boys dive into the world of activist burnout and self care. What are the symptoms of burnout? Is it inevitable? How can we prevent it or address it when it arises? Is self care for the privileged? Is it selfish to indulge in distraction when there is so much work to be done? This is a massive episode that includes the voices of fifteen other activists. Normally we would split such a lengthy episode up into a two-parter but after giving it much thought, we felt it was important to keep the entire discussion in tact. This an episode we have been wanting to do for years. In fact, we started recording interviews in preparation for this episode nearly two years ago. We discuss why it took so long, the roll that the podcast plays in both our own burnout as well as our self care. The episode culminates in a long overdue announcement about the future of the podcast. You can always reach The Bearded Vegans by emailing TheBeardedVegans@gmail.com or visiting TheBeardedVegans.com
