Season 1 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine took a lot of risks and introduced us to stereotype-busting women characters. Our crew talks about the series premiere “Emissary,” our earliest impressions of the DS9 main characters, and Kira and Dax’s key episodes.
Special guest Amy Imhoff of Shoes and Starships joins us to discuss the TNG character Ensign Ro Laren. We look at her key episodes and role in laying the groundwork for key elements of DS9 and Voyager.
Harcourt Fenton Mudd is an "intergalactic pimp" whom we first meet trafficking mail order brides and later see creating an android of his ex-wife just so he can keep her locked up. Yet Mudd, often described as a "loveable rogue," is considered a fan favorite and was the only non-Enterprise crew character to recur on TOS. Join us as our crew takes an in-depth look at the three Mudd-centric episodes ("Mudd’s Women," "I, Mudd" and TAS’ "Mudd’s Passion").
Special guest Kayla LaFrance, space scientist and winner of TBS' King of the Nerds, joins Sue, Grace and Jarrah in an appreciation of Captain Kathryn Janeway. In this episode we talk about Janeway's importance as a role model for girls, discuss common critiques leveled against her, and share our favorite Janeway moments.
Andi, Sue and Jarrah discuss the 1985 Star Trek novel Uhura's Song by Janet Kagan, in which Uhura uses music to unite two estranged planets of cat people. Kagan's novel is often criticized for "Mary Sue" characters. In addition to talking about themes of adulthood and naming in Uhura's Song, our crew talks about whether the "Mary Sue" critique is applied unfairly to women characters and whether it's relevant in this instance.
Our hosts tackle the classic Trek movies (Star Trek The Motion Picture through Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country). Join us to talk Saavik, Carol Marcus, Gillian Taylor, three-breasted cat women, fan dances, shapeshifters and more!
On the barrier-breaking individuals and social forces that led Ferengi women from being nothing more than men's property to being fully-clothed, independent businesswomen.
Special guest Kayla Iacovino joins the crew to talk about the original intergalactic ladies' man, Captain Kirk, and his one-shot love interests from Edith Keeler to JJ-verse Carol Marcus.
The whole crew is together to talk about the badass Romulan women that we meet throughout the Star Trek franchise.
The whole crew discusses TOS episode "Wolf in the Fold," which we've identified as one of the worst Trek episodes for women.
Jarrah, Sue and Grace discuss the Starfleet women who held the rank of captain, other than Captain Janeway, from the captain of the USS Saratoga in Star Trek IV to Erika Hernandez in Enterprise.
Jarrah, Andi, and Sue discuss the roles of women on Star Trek: The Next Generation, with a focus on main cast members and best and worst episodes for women.
In our first episode, meet our crew and get to know us as we discuss why we wanted to start this podcast and celebrate our favorite female characters in the Trek franchise!
