APP- 040 AccountingSuite, Music Artists Using Accounting, Tour Vans, Merch Tables, FinTech, Value Added Software In this episode, part of our FinTech series, my guest is Kurt Kunselman, Sales and Marketing Director at AccountingSuite. Yes, he’s an expert in accounting software, but his background is in the music industry, which makes for a pretty interesting case study in the accounting needs of small businesses. How do performing artists do their accounting? What kinds of financial and business know-how do musicians need to have? It turns out that the musician’s merch table is a broadly informative case study in running a small business and good accounting practices. In college, they called Kurt “the rock ’n’ roll accountant.” He started learning this stuff in high school, and he got his college degree in accounting, though he worked as a bass player and music entrepreneur. This episode goes to show that accounting isn’t the buttoned-up business people might think it is. Even rockstars need good accounting. In this episode… Why small businesses needed new accounting software (and why AccountingSuite was it) What even a small, cash-in-cash-out business can gain from keeping good books What any small business can learn from a touring musician’s inventory and accounting management What is an “entreprenartist?” (Hint: If you’re an artist, and you’re serious, you are one.) How to account for merchandise (buying inventory is not an expense!) How Kurt talks musicians into learning to use AccountingSuite The specific ins and outs of how musician-businesses set up their AccountingSuite What kinds of business entities should musicians have? The secrets of “merch table” businesses, from musicians to surf shops The business of accounting software itself, and how “SAAAS (Software As An Accounting Service)” works What is the deal with SleeterCon/Accountex and the bella vita of accounting software industry conferences in Vegas? What accountants are here on Earth to do: grow companies Links AccountingSuite.com @AccountingSuite on Twitter

More FinTech excitement, San Francisco entrepreneurship, and value billing for accounting companies. Please join us as we take a deep dive with Rob McGrorty, a recovering accountant turned Product person. He’s developed an aversion to overly complex systems and now spends his time creating simplicity and automation from chaos. Starting his career at KPMG, that same aversion quickly made life at a Big 4 dissatisfying. He left that life behind to found a subscription-based advisory company where he simplified operational complexities and enabled rapid-growth companies to succeed. In short order, his company assisted more than $50M in fundraising across nearly a hundred growing companies, and ushered in two successful exits. Looking for a new challenge, in early 2015 the company successfully made a strategic exit. Now, as the head of Product at Webgility, he’s again focusing on improving overly complex systems and processes for Commerce companies. Rob is driving Webgility`s product strategy to improve the way small businesses and small enterprises deal with some of the most frustrating challenges in Finance, Accounting, Logistics, and Compliance. APP: 037 TaxBestimates – Startup World of FinTech My guest this episode is Sammy Soto from TaxBestimates. We discussed the FinTech startup world. That stands for “financial technology,” in case you’re wondering. TaxBestimates is built to work for the individual taxpayer the way that other tax software really only works for business customers. It’s all about increasing transparency in the tax filing process, empowering the user to make better, more informed financial decisions. Sammy has a background in accounting, but he always knew he wanted to get into startups. It’s a killer combination; he’s a “full-stack accountant,” and his combined experience as an accountant, software developer and entrepreneur has something to teach everybody. In this episode… What TaxBestimates does for the individual customer that other accounting software only did for enterprise customers What is the business thinking behind open-sourcing a software idea? The pain points in filing taxes which good software can help relieve The “low-hanging fruit”: Basic adjustments taxpayers can make to increase their take-home pay Why you only need to know enough to be “dangerous;” you don’t have to be an expert in everything Learning the vocabulary of Fintech (What the heck is a “unicorn”???) How Sammy’s company raised its funding and launched its product The emotional rollercoaster of startup life How to relate to your users as a software company How to get and incorporate feedback as an early-stage software company and maintain relationships with users/customers How to use Facebook for engagement What is the product lifecycle in Fintech? How a product like TaxBestimates might expand its product line to address more pain points Links Connect on Facebook TaxBestimates website
