He served as an ambulance driver in World War I and worked in journalism before publishing his story collection In Our Time. He went on to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. His most famous novels include The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea, which won the 1953 Pulitzer. In 1954, Hemingway won the Nobel Prize. He later committed suicide on July 2, 1961, in Ketchum, Idaho.

Harvey Bernard Milk was an American politician who made history when he became one of the first openly gay officials in the United States in 1977, when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was assassinated in 1978.
