Preparing for the Unknown: The Public and Private Perspective | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1204

In the month of September alone, New Jersey has seen the threat of a hurricane as well as the detonation of improvised explosive devices. These events illustrate that our current preparedness climate is not predictable. We must be prepared to respond to events that are both forecasted and those that occur without warning. Scheduled during FEMA’s National Preparedness Month, this podcast features a discussion that includes both the public and private sector perspective, as they prepare for two types of events: notice and no-notice. Specifically, we discuss the messaging, resources, and recommendations of our state and private sector partners as they relate to emergencies that occur in New Jersey.

Homeland Security Advisors Series: Part III - Border Security with Director Gil Orrantia (Arizona) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 660

Homeland security advisors (HSAs) are the sole representative for the Governor to the US Department of Homeland Security. Despite the critical role HSAs play, little is known about the position. The Governors Homeland Security Advisors Council (GHSAC) is conducting a podcast mini-series through the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness Intelligence. Unclassified. The first episode of the podcast will provide an overview of the role of the HSA, discuss how HSAs interact with their governors, and identify how states play a role in homeland security. The remaining six episodes of the podcast will focus on specific threats HSAs face in their jurisdictions. The goal of this podcast series is to provide more awareness about homeland security advisors and the state role in homeland security. Join Director of Intelligence Rosemary Martorana as she speaks to Arizona Homeland Security Director Gil Orrantia on issues related to border security and his experiences as the Governors Homeland Security Advisors Council (GHSAC) president.

 Analyst Roundtable Series: 9/11 Propaganda | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1070

With September 11 approaching, three NJOHSP intelligence analysts discuss what we might see from ISIS, al-Qa’ida, and al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula in the days leading up to the 15th anniversary. Angie Gad, Alyssa Potter, and Jenna Raymond provide an overview of messaging from ISIS and the al-Qa’ida network last year, and then discuss possible audio messages and written publications to coincide with the 15th anniversary. Additionally, they debate who could send messages, keeping in mind ISIS’s second-in-command and spokesman—Abu Muhammad al-Adnani—was allegedly recently killed, and Usama Bin Ladin’s son—Hamza Bin Ladin— issued audio messages in the last year and appears to be preparing for a leadership role within the al-Qa’ida network. They round up the conversation by discussing recent arrests of homegrown violent extremists and the likelihood of a plot on or around September 11.

New Jersey Suspicious Activity Reporting System (NJSARS) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 708

Suspicious activity is any observed behavior that could indicate terrorism or terrorism-related crime. NJOHSP encourages law enforcement, first responders, and our private and public sector partners to report suspicious activity. Reporting suspicious behavior could potentially stop the next terrorist incident. Even if you think your observation is not important, it may be a piece of a larger puzzle. Case studies of terrorist attempts or successful attacks have shown that the attackers live within our communities and have prior contact with local law enforcement not only during the planning stages, but also during the execution phase or immediately after. The New Jersey Suspicious Activity Reporting System (NJSARS) shares suspicious activity information to law enforcement partners throughout the State. NJSARS is also linked to the FBI’s national SAR system known as eGuardian, which partners with the Nationwide SAR Initiative (NSI) to form a single repository accessible to thousands of law enforcement personnel and analysts nationwide. Join Director of Intelligence Rosemary Martorana and Collection and Dissemination Bureau Chief Maureen Lancaster as they explore what constitutes suspicious activity, the flow of information once a tip or lead is received, and different mechanisms that can be utilized when reporting suspicious activity in New Jersey.
