The rules for tax-deferred retirement accounts are changing as of January 1st. A new law called the SECURE Act takes effect on January 1st. It was signed into law by President Trump as part of the 2020 government spending bill. Investment advisers say it will allow more U.S. workers to participate in these plans. The SEC is proposing some changes to the definition of an accredited investor that would make it easier to qualify. Just days before Christmas, it released a proposal that includes new qualification categories that go beyond the current requirements for income and wealth. If these amendments are approved, more individuals would be allowed to invest in private placement or crowdfunding deals without sacrificing the quality of the investor pool. www.NewsForInvestors.com
A new study demonstrates how rent control can do more harm than good in local housing markets. It shows that rent control will backfire on the demand for housing by decreasing the supply, along with a host of other negative impacts that will ultimately harm the local economy. There’s a battle brewing over fire insurance in California. The state insurance commissioner issued an order that bans insurance companies from dropping policies for homes in wildfire-prone areas. Commissioner Ricardo Lara also wants the California Fair Plan Association to offer more comprehensive coverage. This last week, the insurance industry went to court to get Lara’s mandate overturned, claiming that Lara has gone beyond his authority and the mandate is a violation of the law.

Redfin is making it easier for buyers who don’t want to use an agent. It recently announced the expansion of its Redfin Direct program to the massive California real estate market. With Redfin Direct, buyers can make web-based offers on Redfin listings, without the help of an agent. That saves money for the seller, and can make a buyer’s offer more competitive. www.NewsForInvestors.com
The Justice Department is suing a city in Southern California for violating the Fair Housing Act. The lawsuit claims that Hesperia’s “Crime Free Rental Housing” ordinance discriminated against African American & Latino renters. The ordinance has been amended, but previously included a mandatory eviction clause for tenants that had engaged in criminal activity, and their families. While some landlords support programs that cut down on criminal behavior, critics claim these laws are being used by cities
