The Hamilcast: A Hamilton Podcast show

The Hamilcast: A Hamilton Podcast

Summary: In this podcast about all things Hamilton, Hamilton-related, Hamilton-adjacent, or anything else in the Miranda universe, I (your host Gillian Pensavalle) talk to guests (and my sometimes co-host/all times husband Michael Paul Smith) about such things as: how Hamilton brings people together, how we find Ham references in everyday life, and the general brilliance of the show. I'm proud to say that we've spoken to almost everyone from the original creative team (aka "The Cabinet") including the man himself: Lin-Manuel Miranda. In addition, I've had cast members from every company, crew members, musicians, creatives, and the hard working people that keep the production alive. I've also had to pleasure of speaking to experts on the show and its history, some of my superfan friends of note, celebrity Ham enthusiasts, and everything in between.  When I started this podcast in January of 2016, I could not have imagined the incredible community that has grown around the show and the amazing experiences that have come my way. Thank you to everyone who has listened, appeared on the show, contributed, or reached out in any way. This podcast is for you and I absolutely love making it. If you have any great Ham stories or funny references that you've come across, let me know! Email TheHamilcast [at] gmail [dot] com, or contact me on social media @TheHamilcast. I also have a Patreon that has given rise to the loveliest corner of the internet, ever. You can learn more about how to be a part of that lovely corner, and how to submit questions to guests, and to be part of my monthly AMA's at https://www.patreon.com/TheHamilcast

#15: We’ll never be free until we end slavery | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:05

It’s a bummer, but we have to talk about the crazy level of hypocrisy surrounding our Founding Fathers fighting for freedom yet still owning slaves. It sucks. We break down who was the biggest hypocrite and… we hate to say it, but there’s a good possibility Alexander and Eliza Hamilton owned some slaves of their own. But we balance things out with some awesome listener emails! Silver lining? Yes, because we have the best listeners of all time.

#14: He plays and he raises the stakes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:07

We’re back talking Chernow and this week we really #FeelTheBurr (especially since we’re sipping on some Aaron Burr Cidery goodness). It’s pretty much a therapy session for Aaron Burr. In spite of Gillian and Ashley’s best efforts to have a Harry Potter-centric episode, Bianca and Meg keep things on track. Fun fact: Ham4Ham didn’t start with the Broadway show we know and love. Intriguing right?

#13: Emergency Hamilcast! We saw Hamilton this week! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:28

Look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now! Thanks to total strangers moved to kindness by Gillian's story of never seeing Hamilton, IT HAPPENED! With backstage access! The very same night Lin-Manuel Miranda won the Pulitzer Prize!!! We are so overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude we bumped our previously scheduled episode to next week and recorded an emergency podcast so we could tell our stooooorrrryyyy.

#11: After the war, I went back to New York | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:48

Michael Paul Smith is back for round two! We talk Hamilton SoulCycle and get into some awesome listener emails. Things take a bit of a sad turn then discussing Chapter 9 in Chernow, “Raging Billows.” Sadfaces.

#10: The world turned upside down | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:12

It’s our 10th episode! Our Hamisode! Gillian and Bianca are joined by Gillian’s husband Michael Smith, who finally listened to the cast album after months of holding out. Mike gushes over his favorite songs, gives advice for people living with the Hamilton-obsessed, and talks Marshall Mathers, John Adams, and more. We get into the badass Peggy Schuyler and The Battle of Yorktown in our discussion of Chapter 8. Did you know “The World Turned Upside Down” was an actual march that was played by the Bri

#9: Down for the count and I'm drownin' in 'em | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:00

Cue all the memes, all the gifs, and all the references because this week we are joined by none other than Scott Wasserman. Oh ya know, just the guy who programs all of the beats in a little show called HAMILTON! Yup, we are still floating after this awesome conversation with the Hamilton Beatmaster. And you guys! It’s perfect because we’re up to Chernow’s “The Lovesick Colonel” chapter where Ham meets Eliza and Scott told us all about the badass rewiiiiiind in “Satisfied.”

#8: I’m sorry, is this not your speed?! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:23

The one and only Hollis Andrews aka @HamiltonsSquad calls in from Los Angeles and talks everything from Lin-Manuel Miranda shouting her out from the Richard Rodgers stage, to the love between Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens, and the real reason Ham didn’t duel Charles Lee… wow, there’s a lot happening this week.

 #7: I never had a group of friends before I promise that I’ll make y’all proud. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:25

It’s listener appreciation time! Gillian and Bianca read some of your emails and talk about how awesome you all are. And in Chernow’s “The Little Lion” chapter, we learn a little more about the friendship between Hamilton, Laurens, and Lafayette. Swoon.

#6: The truth is in ya face when ya hear the British cannons go…BOOM! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:39

This week, we're talking Broadway bootlegs and Chapter 4 in Chernow: “The Pen and the Sword.” Also, Gillian’s Hamilton FOMO made her temporarily lose her mind so she tells a cautionary Craigslist tale. Yikes.

#5: Don’t modulate the key then not debate with me! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:23

Welcome Lizzy but you know her as @TheHamWing! Lizzy talks about her wonderful Hamilton/West Wing mashups as well as the next chapter in Chernow’s book, “The Collegian.” It turns out “The Farmer Refuted” pamphlet was no joke, but apparently that whole Ham punching the bursar thing was. Womp womp.

#4: Then a hurricane came, and devastation reigned | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:51

Resident high school history teacher Ashley Graffeo returns to gush over seeing “Hamilton” for the first time and talk about Chapter Two in Chernow’s book, aptly titled “Hurricane.” Not to mention Hamilton’s early poetry in which he calls someone “an artful little slut.” Damn, Ham!

 #3: Get your education | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 44:53

Kathleen Cameron, the hilarious genius behind the Hamilton Dubsmashes, stops by to talk about being noticed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and dives into the prologue and first chapter of Chernow’s book.

 #2: Here comes the GeneRAL! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:50

This week's guest is Ashley Graffeo, Gillian's best friend and History and Government teacher at NYC’s Harvey Milk High School. Ashley talks about how she uses “Hamilton” to get her students excited about American History. Spoiler alert: it totally works and there may or may not be rap battles involved. She also tells a story about the truly badass Peggy Schuyler.

 #1: Okay, so we're doing this. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:21

In the inaugural episode of The Hamilcast, Gillian and Bianca discuss how “Hamilton” reignited their friendship and explain what to expect in upcoming episodes. Hint: Chernow
