Is “Me Time” Necessary? – HIRL Episode 91 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:33

Do you ever feel like there just isn’t enough time in your life to take care of yourself? In the midst of your life do you fail to remember to do the things you want to do? Do the demands of parenting and homeschooling make you feel guilty if you take time for yourself? We think this is an important discussion to have out loud. Join Fletch and Kendra on this episode of HomeschoolingIRL as we welcome Dr. Melanie Wilson, Christian psychologist and homeschooling mom of 6, into the studio to chat about “me time”. We discuss whether or not taking time for ourselves is practical, and doable, and we share a lot of laughs along the way!  Spiritual Abuse, Part 2 – HIRL Episode 90 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:30

On last week’s episode, we sat down with Dale and Jonalyn Fincher from Soulation/Freedom Builders to begin an important discussion on the topic of spiritual abuse. We just scratched the surface of the discussion by talking about how homeschoolers are prime targets for “movements.” On this episode, we continue the conversation, but we focus on the practical issues surrounding the topic of spiritual abuse. During our interview, we not only define what spiritual abuse is, but we warn the listener how to look for the “red flags” of abuse in any movement or organization. We finish our discussion talking about how to escape an abusive situation and what you should do as you begin to heal from abuse.  Spiritual Abuse, Part 1 – HIRL Episode 89 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 45:49

Spiritual Abuse. It doesn’t just happen in South American cults. If we are not careful, we can find ourselves involved in movements where the focus quickly turns to behavior modification or blind obedience to personalities and personas. On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with Dale and Jonalyn Fincher from Soulation/Freedom Builders to discuss spiritual abuse in the homeschooling world. We split the interview into two parts, on this week’s episode we begin the discussion with a discussion about how homeschoolers are prime targets for “movements” and the hidden side of the purity movement EPISODE TIMELINE 7:19 Introduction to the podcast 8:46 Interview Part 1: Dale/Jonalyn Fincher 28:40 Interview Part 2:Dale/Jonalyn Fincher 41:00 Letters from Listeners, Wrapping up the show SHOW NOTES: Recommended Resources: What’s the Big Deal About Spiritual Abuse (and What You Can Do About It) – 50% off with the code Home50 Previous Episodes Mentioned: None Music clips used on this episode: Come Ye Sinners – Robert Seay – Buy it on iTunes Here SUBSCRIBE AND LEAVE AN iTUNES REVIEW: Allow the magic of the internet to deliver Homeschooling In Real Life to your tablet or smart phone.  Jesus vs. Santa – HIRL Episode 79 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:15

Does Santa have any place in the celebration of Christmas? If you listen to some homeschoolers talk about it, event the mention of Santa Claus associated with Christmas will land you in the “loner’s corner” of your co-op. Yet, others celebrate good ol’ jolly Santa Claus right next to the baby Jesus. There is also a third category of homeschoolers (like Fletch) who enjoy stirring the pot and cracking off remarks like: “You know…if you rearrange the letters in Santa…it spells S-A-T-A-N.” Fletch can be cheeky that way! Where does that leave us? Should we allow Santa to have a seat at the Christmas table or should he and Rudolph be hidden high up on the shelf with that pesky elf? With sleighbells ringing and all the yuletide they can muster, Fletch and Kendra sit down for an open, honest discussion about the celebration of Christmas and answer the question: What should Christian homeschooling parents do with Santa Claus at Christmas? Tune in and join them for a fun and lively debate on this edition of HomeschoolingIRL.  Teens And Social Media – HIRL Episode 72 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:26

We are beyond the days of speculating about whether social media will last. Instead social media continues to morph and reinvent itself into new platforms with new target audiences. Whether it focuses on 140 characters of shared data or photos or just modified chatting with friends, social media is invasive. Are you wondering how to navigate the virtual worlds of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat with your teenagers? One of our HIRLers wrote in and asked us to tackle the topic of teenagers and social media, so we did what we do best. We sat down and had an open and honest discussion with our own teenagers. We don’t do things perfectly and we face the same challenges as you do in your homeschools. We even have regrets. Won’t you join us on this podcast as we get real with our kids and let you peek into the conversation with us? More than ever, we want to hear from you. Let us know what you think. This is a great discussion and we think you will love it.
