Gary always looks at things in a positive light, and though suffering so much from witnessing the tragedy that befell his son, as well as losing his wife, he shows us the power of thinking positive and overcoming enormous challenges. Gary is a wonderful example of how one can overcome personal tragedy, and keeping the promise of life at the top of the spire. (Gary’s son) Nick was at summer camp. He was on a hike sharing a water bottle. Somebody had the meningococcal meningitis bacteria in their system. Nick took a sip and passed the bottle back to the next guy. By the time he passed the water bottle back to the next guy, the bacteria was dead. A day later, Nick came down with meningococcal meningitis. They saved NIck’s life that night.

This recording began in 1965 when the author was recording Navajo creation stories from friends of his—Ray Brown, Jimmie Blueeyes, Rae Joe, Raymond Tsosie, and, most importantly Jay DeGroat from whom Gerald learned much about Navajo healing practices as well as mythology. In that sense, Jay (Jooghi, or Bluejay) is as much the creator of this audiobook as Gerald. All in all, these are the interlocked tribal stories that have woven the great Navajo nation into one of the largest indigenous tribes in the world. As storytellers, the Navajos create a moral code for harmonious living with all things. Ambient sounds and music by jazz musician Ray Griffin whose work can be heard on the other recordings in this series.

Mary McGrath is a freelance writer and photographer based in Los Angeles.  Her interests in writing date back to junior high school, when she began contributing to her school yearbook as a poet. Her first book of poetry, Trespassing Stoplights and Attitudes was published through Mudborn Press in Santa Barbara while she attended UCSB. Writing, photography and music have always been passions of hers, and after spending 25 years in the advertising field, Mary finally left corporate life to concentrate on her love of the arts.
