BWAF has been a 501 (c) (3) organization since 2007. ***OUR HERSTORY:The Black Women’s Arts Festival (BWAF) was founded and produced in March 2003 by Founder and Former Director Cassendre Xavier. Xavier, a multi-media artist who coined the term "renaissance negresse" in 2002, “…grew up with little support and [role] models of professional Black women artists.” In response to this lack of visibility Xavier produced a 3-day event at The Rotunda in Phila., PA., which showcased the work of black women artists in: performance, visual arts, literary arts, and film. SPECIAL GUEST: Philadelphia Photographer Martin Regusters becomes “Citizen Diplomat” Prize-winning photographer selected to represent Philadelphia. For nearly 30 years Martin Regusters, Leaping Lion Photography, has been one of the city’s most prolific photographers. Training his lens on neighborhoods, government, corporate leaders, civic protests and social gatherings, he has chronicled a slice of Philadelphia life that cuts across age, gender and ethnic background. Martin's legacy and passion of capturing distinctive photographs have been featured in dozens of local and national newspapers, magazines, brochures, and printed literature of every description. Those lucky enough to book him for a “shoot” have discovered a practiced professionalism and easy humor that contribute to the success of any project. That combination of professionalism and personality make Regusters a perfect pick for his next assignment as “ Citizen Diplomat” in Poland. This month, Regusters will travel to Torun, Poland to participate in “Torun in the Twin Lens,” a “diplomatic mission” that will bring together nine photographers from across the globe for a weeklong learning, photographing and networking opportunity. Sponsored by the International Visitors Council of Philadelphia (IVC), an international relations organization, Regusters will represent Philadelphia as a Citizen Diplomat. In that capacity he will share Philadelphia’s cultural diversity and his own photographic skill as part of the city’s Sister Cities program.

Dr. Arslanian is the Richard L. Day Endowed Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the principal investigator of the NIH-funded Diabetes Fellowship Training (T32) and Pediatric Diabetes Scholars Program (K12), and Director of Children’s Hospital’s Weight Management & Wellness Center.
