Podcast Episode 48: Nichiren, Christians and Getting Along | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Announcements: The pledge-drive for the Daily Buddhism's new computer is FINISHED! There were 14 donors in total, and we reached the goal last Monday. Thanks everyone for your help with this. I haven't bought the new system yet, so if you have any recommendations or advice about Netbooks, send me a note. I'm going to leave the pledge drive page up on the site for a couple of weeks so people can see how it went. If you didn't donate before and still want to, then go ahead, I can always add a little RAM to the system or something. Now I have a request or a challenge for all you aspiring writers out there. The final article in this week's podcast is a guest post about Nichiren Buddhism written by someone who follows that tradition. I think it's time we covered the various denominations of Buddhism once again, but I'd like to do it differently this time around. Rather than simply have me explain the facts, over the next few weeks, I'd like to feature guest posts about various denominations of Buddhism written by actual practitioners of that group. So if you would like to explain the core ideas of your sect or denomination of Buddhism and why you follow that particular path, or why you feel it is the "True Path," then email me and we'll discuss your idea. And now a shameless plug for one of my other podcasts: This past week, I have completely changed the format of the Arcane Tales podcast. The new format is all old-time radio shows. For now, I'm sticking with Mystery, Science Fiction, and Horror themes, but if I get requests, I can add comedies and dramas as well. If you like classic stories that might take you wayyyy back, then check it out, there's at least one new show posted every day now. Go to http://ArcaneTales.com and subscribe to the podcast or just listen in your browser window for an easy preview. And now let's get on with this week's show!  Podcast Episode 47: Enlightenment and Love | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Podcast Episode 47: Enlightenment and Love Announcements: The pledge-drive for the Daily Buddhism's new computer isn't quite done yet, but it's getting close, the details are on the site. This past week, I have been in the process of rebuilding the Tao of the Day website from the ground up with new software. Previously, most of my sites have run the Wordpress software, but I'm looking into another platform called Joomla, which is a little more flexible with what it can do. I plan to switch over to the new site probably on Monday the 9th, so stop in and take a look at the Taooftheday.com site and see what you think about the organization of things there. I don't know yet if I want to try something similar with the DailyBuddhism.com site, but I might if things work out well with the Tao site. Let me know your opinion on the new site starting Monday. And now let's get on with this week's show!  Podcast Episode 46: Words of Advice For The Beginning Buddhist | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Podcast Episode 46: Words of Advice For The Beginning Buddhist Welcome back, this is Daily Buddhism audio show number forty-six. My name is Brian Schell, and I am the your host for the show. You can find the text as well as all links mentioned in this program and all past episodes on the website at www.dailybuddhism.com. I love answering your questions, so please send in yours by email or voicemail to brian@dailybuddhism.com or 937-660-4949. Announcements: Nothing major to report this week as far as announcements go. The pledge-drive I announced last week has been doing really well, and we're more than halfway to the goal. I'll explain it again just this once, but beyond that I won't bring it up again until the goal is reached. Basically, I'm in the need for a new laptop. I need to go with as inexpensive a replacement as possible, so I've decided on one of the little $300-ish netbooks. I'm pretty much decided on an Acer Aspire One (link in show notes). As always, money is tight, and the job situation here in Dayton isn't getting any better. I hesitated to ask for help, but it seems to have gone well so far. With your help, hopefully, we can wrap this up before next weekend. If you've donated in the past, please don't think I'm asking for more from you; thanks for your past support. If you are one of the folks who said they might send something in someday, or have otherwise intended to send something but put it off, then now would be a really good time. As always, a donation of $50 or more will get you a free year of the Weekly Buddhism PDF Magazine. Of course, anything will help. You can donate at Donate at: http://dailybuddhism.com/donate Or check the status and totals of how things are going in the top-right hand corner of www.dailybuddhism.com or at http://www.dailybuddhism.com/pledge-drive [Play iPhone iMantra software review request] Well, I don't have an iPhone, but it sounds like an interesting application. If anyone out there has an iPhone and the iMantra app, or any other app that might be of interest to the Daily Buddhism audience, I'd love to see you write a guest post with a review. Send me an email at brian@dailybuddhism.com if you'd like to write up a review. Of course, guest posts on most any topic are welcome. Oh- I did cover Mala beads a while back. You can do a search on the site for the term 'Mala' and it'll come right up with the article, or you can find the same information by listening to Podcast Episode 27, And now let's get on with this week's show! I'm running a little short on questions for next week, so if you have one, now is a great time to send it in! Announcements: [recorded “thanks” from Chris in Texas] And thank you for those kind words. Chris was referring to podcast 43, wherein I explained the foundations of Buddhism in a nearly hour-long episode. I may release that one as an audiobook someday, but for now it's completely free. Yes, all the Daily Buddhism podcasts are completely fine to redistribute to as many people as you want at no charge so long as you don't edit them and you give away the episode in its entirety. Hey guys, I'm in the need for a new laptop. I need to go with as inexpensive a replacement as possible, so I've decided on one of the little $300-ish netbooks. I don't know yet if it'll be an Acer or Asus, but I've heard good things about both, and they're similar in cost. As always, money is tight, and the job situation here in Dayton isn't getting any better. I hesitate to do it, but I'm going to throw this idea out there and see where it goes: "Fund Drive." If you've donated in the past, please don't think I'm asking for more from you; thanks for your past support. If you are one of the folks who said they might send something in someday, or have otherwise intended to send something but put it off, then now would be a really good time. As always, a donation of $50 or more will get you a free year of the Weekly Buddhism PDF Magazine. Of course, anything will help. No, neither I nor the Daily Buddhism are legally a nonprofit organization, so your gift is just that, a gift. Thank you for your continuing support, and I hope to keep answering your questions and bringing the path to Enlightenment to a whole new batch of people in the upcoming year!  Podcast Episode 43: The Foundations of Buddhism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Announcements: As I mentioned last time, this week we'll be covering ALL the basics of Buddhism. On this show, we'll look at some facts about Buddhism, talk about the life of Buddha, have a look at what he had to say, and see how to live according to the rules. That's a lot for one show, and this will probably be the longest episode ever,. I think it's worth doing in one big chunk, because when this episode is done, you'll know the ideas that underlie about 90% of everything else in Buddhism. And now let's get to this week's material!  Podcast Episode 40: Parenting, Ahimsa, and Cannibals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Podcast Episode 40: Parenting, Ahimsa, and Cannibals Welcome back, this is Daily Buddhism audio show number forty. My name is Brian Schell, and I am the your host for the show. You can find the text as well as all links mentioned in this program and all past episodes on the website at www.dailybuddhism.com. Announcements: 1) For those of you who get the Tao of the Day emails, and especially those of you who don't, the http://www.taooftheday.com website is restarting with a new translation as of Monday. We've finished another round of 81 chapters, and it's time to start over again with #1. Now is the best time to start looking at the Tao. You can sign up for the daily email at http://www.taooftheday.com or subscribe to the RSS feed there as well. Please note: I will leave all the MP3 files on the server, so there are now two full versions of the Tao available for free download; I don't see much need for a third. So as of a couple of days ago, I will no longer be recording and releasing new chapters of the Tao in a podcast format. After more than 162 episodes, I'm not sure that it's something I want to continue to do indefinitely. I will still be sending out a chapter a day by email, RSS and on the blog, but the recordings are done. Actually, now that I don't have to deal with the recordings, I may be able to put in a little more commentary and not have to let the Tao speak for itself so much. 2) On this podcast, I read my own articles and a few guest posts. The Daily Buddhism audio show is the read-aloud version of what goes into the basic Daily Buddhism daily email newsletter and the original articles that go on the daily Buddhism.com blog. But the story doesn't end there. Many of the topics I discuss here have reader comments and additional thoughts posted after the original material that you read here. Most of the articles this past week received comments, many of which were probably more insightful than my original post! Check out the comments that appear after the original articles on the blog. I have also started including the responses to some of the busier topics in the Weekly Buddhism PDF Magazine, as many of these responses are worth holding onto. And now on to this week's show!
