Emily and I discussed the Hit & Run truck vs pedestrian accident that was posted in the Lost Coast Outpost this morning. Our thoughts go out to the 23 year old man who was flown out of the area in critical condition. We also discussed current trails projects and alternate funding sources that California is using for such projects.

Emily and I spoke with Sheila Parrot and other city engineer's about Eureka's new public safety campaign. You have probably seen posters and banners all over town. It is part of a large effort to reduce pedestrian vs vehicle accidents in the City. In past years, Eureka has had a much higher than normal rate of these types of accidents for it's population size. This campaign has is in concert with the reduction of speed limits, new radar signs and new countdown crosswalk signs at all lights within the city.

Emily and I spoke with Neil Davis of Walk & Bike Mendocino. This is a new organization promoting walking and biking for in town commutes of 2 miles or less.

This morning Emily and I spoke with Mark Mueller and Melanie Williams of the Bike Month Humboldt Coalition. We spoke of the many successful events that have happened thus far and all the events still to come.

This morning I talked with Dave Hayes, board member of the Humboldt Trails Council. We talked about the trails stewards program, Lacks Creek and the McKay tract. We also talked about Bike month and bike to school day which is tomorrow.

Emily and I speak with Matt Harvey of the CHP and Joan Levy of the Department of Health and Human Services about the Redwood Crossing Guard Program and the Launch of this pilot program at Lafayette Elementary in Myrtletown. We also talked about the next iteration of the Draft Bicycle Ordinance in Eureka. When this was first proposed it met with a great deal of controversy. Other agencies have since weighed in on it. The city council will be discussing it today.

This morning Emily and I spoke with Brian Simon of Caltrans about the non-motorised improvements that have been made thus far in the community of Manilla and new proposals that include a separate class 1 trail and larger colorized shoulder on hwy 255. There will be a public meeting on these projects tomorrow night at the Manilla community Center from 5pm till 7pm

Shasta Living Street's goals include: • Quiet, low-speed residential streets • A world-class bicycling network with bike lanes to serve people of all abilities, ages 8 to 80 • Protected bike lanes on busy streets with sophisticated intersection controls • Off-street pathways, greenways and trails • Walkable, bicycle-friendly business districts • All children can walk or bike to school • Services and events to support community-wide active living excellence

This morning Emily and I spoke with Jeff Schwein of Green Dot Transportation Solutions and Charles Roecklein, City Engineer for Eureka. The south entry to Eureka was looked at in terms of safety and aesthetic. Various different solutions are being discussed at a public workshop tomorrow (Wednesday) starting at 5:30pm at the Wharfinger Building by the small boat basin in Eureka.

This morning Emily and I talked with Tony Dang of California Walks about the goal and mission of the organization to create safe, healthy, walkable communities in California, how CalWalks works with local affiliates and partners, the 2025 Strategic Framework for Increasing Walkability in CA, a summary of their recent Best Foot Forward Summit and some upcoming Community Pedestrian Safety Trainings that CalWalks will be leading in Humboldt County.
