The audio recording quality is endearingly crappy. A list of favorite "garage scenes in films" are compiled. In keeping with the theme of finality, each member discusses a celebrated filmmaker's last cinematic effort. It's a real smorgasbord of conflicting emotions; culminating in a bonafide rabble-rousing finale that's sure to bring down the house (or, err, in this case, the garage). Questions remain. In this episode the crew takes on a global zombie outbreak with a review of WORLD WAR Z. There's also a descent into madness during a review of the psychological horror film BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO, which is capped off with a spoilers section in which the crew offers their harebrained, half-baked interpretations of the film's ending. The discussion does unravel a bit as there's major disagreement about whether or not there were candles involved in BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIOS' climax. Grab your headphones and get caught up in the auditory bliss this episode offers!
In the fifteenth episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST, the gents are thrown through massive skyscrapers with a review of Zack Snyder's MAN OF STEEL, trace Sarah Polley's family history with the doc STORIES WE TELL, and seem to be "in on the joke" tackling Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's self-referential comedy THIS IS THE END. It's a big episode with existential themes such as the messianic qualities of Superman, the intangible nature of truth, well-endowed demons, and whether or not someone can survive the seven layers of Tyler Perry Purgatory.
On the fourteenth episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST, Christian, Armando, and Jericho ditch the sweltering heat of the garage for the poshness of the living room in order to give each other jump scares with a review of the horror anthology flick V/H/S 2, and then hop on the Greta Gerwig train to discuss Noah Baumbach's FRANCES HA. There's also a pointed rant from Christian about CGI magic, the demerits for the dreaded "Tyler Perry Purgatory" are tallied, and a segment involving alcoholic movie watching finally gets its long-overdue wrap up.
Podcasts...the final frontier. In this episode, three friends take their lo-fi, garage-based podcast to new heights as they review JJ Abrams' second space opera, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS. Before visiting the other side of the galaxy, the gang takes a trip to the other side of the Pond to review an independent Irish film called WHAT RICHARD DID. Over the course of both reviews there's discussion of weighty topics such as the effects of violence and its portrayal in film. If this all sounds too high brow, there is also quite a bit of bickering about less than perfect iTunes ratings.
On the twelfth episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST, the gents get lavishly sprinkled with heavy doses of 3D glitter during Baz Luhrmann's THE GREAT GATSBY, and then get into some "mumble-noir" with Amy Seimetz's intense road movie SUN DON'T SHINE. It's a no fluff, sans tomfoolery kind of episode, launching directly into a dissection of the films without all of the usual self-congratulatory fat.
On the eleventh episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST, Christian, Armando, and Jericho recover from episode 10's filmic hangover, getting all "Huck Finn" with a review of Jeff Nichols' coming-of-age drama MUD, and then plunging headlong into the experimental vortex of Shane Carruth's UPSTREAM COLOR. It's a real yack-fest, with the gang vainly trying to explore weighty symbolism involving worms, pigs, strange sound engineer guys, and whether or not Matthew McConaughey will take off his shirt.
