From Crispus Attucks to Barrack Obama, the record shows our contributions to this nation's humanitarian social transformation is rooted in our abiltity to humbly turn from our wicked ways in prayer and to courageously petition the government for relief.  We owe it to the brave freedom fighters to continue thier struggle by pledging to remain vigilant, in every election, from the PTA school board elections to the Presidential Campaigns, thereby doing our part to ensure the wrong side of history will never be forgotten or repeated, i.e, Gang & Gun Violence, Trayvon Matin, Jim Crow, Lynchings and Slavery. ------- UNESCO FLORIDA- The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization - Transatlantic Slave Trade (UNESCO-TST) Florida Center works to promote peace education by collaborating with various cultures in Florida, the United States and the world

UNESCO Florida, July Perry, Voting Activist Lynched 1920 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:00

Click and Listen to the Gist of The history of:   July Perry, Voting Rights Activist~   In 1920, he and another African-American, Mose Norman tried to vote in the November 4th elections. They were denied this right and within a few hours a white on black riot ensued. By the next morning, two white men and several African-Americans were dead (how many is disputed, but reports range from as little as 4 to a high of 60). Many black homes and businesses and one church, one school and a lodge hall were burned to the ground. On top of that, the rest of the African-American residents of Ocoee were that no longer. Ocoee became a white-only town and stayed that way for nearly 60 years. U.S. Census data confirms that no blacks were living in Ocoee until the 1980 Census. Was captured and brought to Orlando by Orange County deputy sheriffs. He was jailed in downtown and later a mob took him out of the jail and hung him. His body was buried in the black section of Greenwood in an unmarked grave. The position of his grave was remembered through the years and in the fall of 2002, a marker was finally placed on his grave site.

Join The Gist of Freedom as we discuss the history of Meharry College with historian, genealogist Chris Mitchell a daughter of a Meharry graduate!  Meharry Medical College, founded in 1876 in Nashville, Tennessee, is the 2nd oldest medical school for African Americans in the nation. The Church and the Society used the donation to establish a program to provide medical training for former slaves.  Meharry had its first graduate in 1877 and the following year there were three graduates. In 1886 the Dental Department was founded followed in 1889 by the Pharmacy Department. In 1915 the Medical Department received a state charger and Meharry became an independent institution. Hubbard Hospital, named after George W. Hubbard, one of the first faculty members, was built in 1917.  In 1952 Dr. Harold D. West became the school’s first African American president. Under his leadership the campus expanded and another wing was added to Hubbard Hospital. A one-man show Performed by Audeloco Award Winning Actor Rome Neal. One Night Only @ The Rustik! ~  Call for tickets 347-406-9700! Written by Laurence Holder, Directed by Rome Neal and Laurence Holder, Musical Score by Bill Lee.SYNOPSIS: Monk is a dramatic monologue by acclaimed African American playwright Laurence Holder that captures Monk’s bravura, genius, humor, and humanity. Holder’s script evokes Monk’s unorthodox jazz piano styling. The narrative chronicles the composer’s early life, his rise to prominence as a self-taught pianist and composer, his participation in the Civil Rights Movement, and his bouts of mental illness. Monk shares with "Duke" Ellington the distinction of being considered one of the 20th Century's greatest American composers. His vision was both ahead of its time and deeply rooted in African American musical traditions, ranging from the sacred music of the black church to the "stride" piano style of James P. Johnson, to the tonal freedom of the "avant garde." Monk helped usher in the bebop revolution, yet he also charted a new course for modern music.
