When visiting the Banff area, make sure to plan a trip to Canmore and visit Grassi Lakes hiking trail. Depending on the season, of course, you'll find this short hiking trail simply...AMAZING! There is a trail map at the head of the path up to the Grassi Lakes - it's really easy to get there. You can even watch people climbing by the Grassi Lakes...and admire their skills. Banff area bears may be hard to spot. If you are lucky, you may see one...or even a small family of bears. But that may be a gamble. (You'll probably see many more beautiful elk - instead :). Therefore, if you'd like to see a bear (for almost sure :), consider the Kicking Horse Grizzly Bear Refuge - the resident grizzly bear Boo. The Refuge is about 2 hours west from Banff - in Golden - British Columbia. Weather and season permitting, as Boo wanders through his territory, you may be as lucky as we were - and bring home awesome bear videos and pictures.
