Last week, NBAA's John Kosak, an Air Traffic Services specialist and staff liaison for the NBAA Weather Subcommittee, highlighted the top weather resources for business aircraft operators. In this week's NBAA Flight Plan podcast, Kosak elaborates on these websites, gives tips on how to best use them and shares further thoughts for safe winter flying.

NBAA Chief Operating Officer Steve Brown represented Member's concerns regarding the FAA's Jan. 1, 2020, deadline to equip aircraft with Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) at a Nov. 18 "Equip 2020" working group meeting. According to Brown, the three main issues that must be addressed are: the equipment's expense, the need to streamline the approval process and to need to accelerate the installation of the equipment.

NBAA, along with other aviation interests, participated earlier this month in the 14th Annual Aviation Security Summit, hosted by the American Association of Airport Executives in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA). While the summit was primarily focused on airport and airline issues, NBAA's Senior Manager of Security and Facilitation Sarah Wolf identified five key topics of interest for business aircraft operators.

The process of predicting weather that could impact aviation is about to change with the conversion of one product to full automation and the advent of another collaborative service that will combine automation with human oversight. The Collaborative Convective Forecast Product, for predictive snapshots of weather in two-hour increments, will soon be automated and offered 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. In addition, the FAA will soon offer a new product: the Collaborative Aviation Weather Statement, an advanced weather forecasting tool with interactive human oversight.

"Instead of saying, 'You should' do this or 'You should' do that, she just went out and did it,"Earhart said of famed aviator Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean."She led by example"

Because owner-pilots wear so many hats, single-pilot operations are among the 2014 Top Safety Focus Areas of the NBAA Safety Committee. "The safety record is not as good as it could be" for single-pilot operations, according to NBAA Safety Committee member Jim Lara, an ATP-rated pilot with 12,000 hours as pilot-in-command, who has spent much of his flight time as a single pilot. As the committee noted on its Top Safety Focus Area web page, "Owner-flown aircraft face unique challenges: often a lack of guidance, financial support, and clear procedures allow the pilot to use personal discretion without a set standard to measure against."
