God's Cultural Mandate to "tend" and "watch over" the planet is for the purpose of guiding, aiding, and increasing the earth's productivity as well as guarding it against degradation which would be the result of neglect.
As the imago dei (image of God) on the planet, God has asked us to represent Him as we reign over His creation.
Most people want to grow. New challenges, the failure of old coping mechanisms, and a desire to play at a higher level all provide motivation.
