Righteous in Christ

Col 1:22 is one of the greatest scriptures that describes our privileged position in Christ. How the believer sees themselves is vital to enjoying fulfilling fellowship with God and living a fruitful life for His glory.  In this teaching we look at the 3 great truths Col 1:22 unveils to us.  Wa are holy - set apart for God to be exclusively His; blameless - without blemish; and we are above reproach - one who cannot be accused of anything wrong.  All this is said to be accomplished "in His sight" which means "in His searching and penetrating gaze.

Practicing righteousness is about maintaining good works.  Good works are works that are prompted by faith, motivated by love and energised by the Holy Spirit

Practicing righteousness is about maintaining good works.  We look at Abraham's life again.  In Gen 15, we see Abraham in a deep sleep when God makes a covenant with him.  This is Righteousness Declared.  In Gen 22, we see Abraham wide awake, obeying the voice of God to sacrifice Isaac, demonstrating the genuine righteousness he had been freely and graciously given in Gen 15:6.  This is Righteousness Practiced.  We also look at maintaining good works and fruitfulness, and Paul's call to Galatian believers to use their liberty for the right kind of works

Practicing righteousness is about maintaining good works.  In the New Testament, God strongly and, at times, aggressively discourages and condemns the wrong kind of works - works that seek to deny, add to or take away from the finished work of Christ.  However, we also see God strongly and consistently encouraging the born again believer to maintain the right kind of works.  New Testament scripture abounds with these exhortations.  The believer in Christ is encouraged to be “zealous for good works” (Titus 2:14), “a pattern of good works” (Titus 2:7), to “maintain good works” (Titus 3:14), have observable “good works” (1 Peter 2:12).  Importantly, we are to "consider one another in order to stir up love and good works" (Heb 10:24)

Practicing righteousness is about yielding to God and not to sin.  Paul, in Romans 6:13, instructs us to yield or present ourselves to God as ‘instruments of righteousness.’  Every musician needs an instrument to express their musical ability.  Although being dead to the power of your old sinful nature, sin still seeks an instrument to express itself.  We are to yield ourselves, our faculties to the Great Musician to express the glory, wonder and magnificence of Christ.  We now, by the acting of yielding to God's powerful grace, now reign and have dominion over sin

Practicing Righteousness is about maturing in Christ.  According to Colossians 1:21-29, holy, and blameless, and above reproach is not mature.  The work of the Cross presents us holy, and blameless, and above reproach.  The ongoing preaching and teaching of Christ, in wisdom, with warning, presents us mature. Declared Righteous and Recreated Righteous is incredible and life-changing and.... maturity awaits!  Let us go on to maturity
