The Last Camellia by Sarah Jio | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:05:15

On the eve of the Second World War, the last surviving specimen of a camellia plant known as the Middlebury Pink lies secreted away on an English country estate. Flora, an amateur American botanist, is contracted by an international ring of flower thieves to infiltrate the household and acquire the coveted bloom. Her search is at once brightened by new love and threatened by her discovery of a series of ghastly crimes. More than half a century later, garden designer Addison takes up residence at the manor, now owned by the family of her husband, Rex. The couple’s shared passion for mysteries is fueled by the enchanting camellia orchard and an old gardener’s notebook. Yet its pages hint at dark acts ingeniously concealed. If the danger that Flora once faced remains very much alive, will Addison share her fate? Plume, May 2013, 978-0452298392

The Translator & The Editor: A Fraught Relationship | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:52:12

What is the role of an editor in a work of translation? Often translators feel a responsibility to the original text that precludes strong editorial intervention, but perhaps the editorial culture of the author’s original country of publication doesn’t really allow for an editor to have a say in improving the book. If an editor who doesn’t know the original language invites a second translator as an external editor, this can create further tension. If more international literature is to move from the realm of small and university presses to the major commercial publishers, this situation needs to be addressed. This panel featured Chad Post, Editor/Publisher, Open Letter Books; Marek Krajewski, Author, Mary Ann Caws, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, English, and French, CUNY Graduate Center; Susan Bernofsky, Director of Literary Translation, School of the Arts, Columbia University; and Victoria Wilson, Editor, Alfred A. Knopf. This event was moderated by David A. Goldfarb, Curator of Literature and Humanities, Polish Cultural Institute New York. This event was organized by the Polish Cultural Institute New York.
