St. Nicholas, who are you? The Saint and the origin of Santa Claus…In Conversation with Thomas Craughwell | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:36

Who is St. Nicholas...it's a beautiful story of a life that transcends time, becoming a full blown witness to total giving in Charity. St. Nicholas, pray for us who desire and need the authentic understanding and practice of self-giving love. (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Thomas-Craughwell.jpg) Here's the wonderful Thomas Craughwell talking about St. Nicholas and other Saints who are great witnesses to the child in each of us. Here is a fantastic site as well on St. Nicholas (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/St.-Nicholas.jpg)

Who is the “Rock” we set our spiritual lives on? A reflection by Msgr. John Esseff | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:55

We all fail, we all collapse under the weight of sin.  Who is our "Rock"?  How do we come to see the areas where we are separated from the(http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Msgr.-John-Esseff-256x300.jpg) Rock who is Jesus Christ.  Msgr. Esseff talks about the dangers of self-reliance.  He discusses many of the major roots of sin which suck us into self-absorption, and what is the only solution that can save us.  The Father in heaven loves us each so much specifically.  We need to turn to that love and rely completely on Him.   From the USCCB website: Gospel Mt 7:21, 24-27 (http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/120612.cfm) Jesus said to his disciples: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven."Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined."

The confluence of many things has brought forth the clear need to be able to articulate the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church in a way that is accessible and applicable. This is not to be an effort where high-minded theories are to be bandied about. Rather, this is a time of opportunity wherein we can apply the Social Doctrine to the concrete so as to bring about a New Kingdom, a Revolution. - Omar G.  St. Clement of Alexandria, early, early father of the Church…” “The Lord has turned all our sunsets into sunrise.” with Mike Aquilina | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:36

What is old is new again. That's why the Fathers are so important, they've done battle with the heresies that continue to plaque our Church even today.  Also in his writings you can see the "Theology of the Body"...1800 years or so before we hear from Pope John Paul II.  Faith and Reason can live in harmony...then knew it then and we can be confident about that now. (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/mikeaquilina-1.jpg)Take a listen to Mike Aquilna, who does a great job giving us the life of this early, early father of the Church, Clement of Alexandria.(http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/St.-Clement-of-Alexandria.jpg) Here in a very small nutshell is an overview of  St. Clement of Alexandria - from wikipedia - (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clement_of_Alexandria) Titus Flavius Clemens (c.150 - c. 215), known as Clement of Alexandria (to distinguish him from Clement of Rome), was a Christian theologian and the head of the noted Catechetical School of Alexandria. Clement is best remembered as the teacher of Origen. He united Greek philosophical traditions with Christian doctrine and valued gnosis that with communion for all people could be held by common Christians specially chosen by God.Though he constantly opposes the concept of gnosis as defined by the Gnostics, he used the term "gnostic" for Christians who had attained the deeper teaching of the Logos. He developed a Christian Platonism.  He presented the goal of Christian life as deification, identified both as Platonism's assimilation into God and the biblical imitation of God. Like Origen, he arose from Alexandria's Catechetical School and was well versed in pagan literature.Origen succeeded Clement as head of the school.Alexandria had a major Christian community in early Christianity, noted for its scholarship and its high-quality copies of Scripture. Clement is counted as one of the early Church Fathers. He advocated a vegetarian diet and claimed that the apostles Peter, Matthew, and James the Just were vegetarians. - wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clement_of_Alexandria) Great trilogy of St. Clement of Alexandria The trilogy into which Clement's principal remains are connected by their purpose and mode of treatment is composed of: * the Protrepticus (http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0208.htm) ("Exhortation to the Greeks") * the Paedagogus ("Instructor") * the Stromata (http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0210.htm) ("Miscellanies") The first book deals with the religious basis of Christian morality, the second and third with the individual cases of conduct.

St. John of Damascus – the last father of the Church with Mike Aquilina | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:24

(http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/mikeaquilina-150x150.jpg)Mike Aquilina give us an overview of the great saints life and impact on the Church St. John of Damascus, not only taught that icons and other sacred artworks are permissible because they point to the incarnation of Jesus, but he also understood the rich value of every word to do the same. He is considered one of the Church's most gifted poets. Every sacred image, whether in art, hymn, poetry can be a prayer that leads us deeper into the heart of God. The St. John Damascus site (http://www.balamand.edu.lb/theology/writingssjd.htm) contains many of his writings...it's fantastic!(http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/st-john-of-damascus1-211x300.jpg) "RIGHTEOUS JOHN OF DAMASCUS.  He was raised in Damascus, Syria, the capital of the Moslem world. When he was ten years of age, his father found a learned monk in the secular studies as well as music and theology. He instructed John and his adopted brother, Cosmas, and John made great progress in theology. At last, the monk departed saying to their father, Sergius, that his sons had become remarkably wise. Sergius soon died, and John was chosen for his office of counselor to the caliph. (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Untitled-71.jpg)During this time, John wrote convincingly against the iconoclasts and Leo the Armenian, as well as the Moslems. He effectively used deductive arguments, history, and parables of the saints. Against the iconoclasts, he argued that since the shadows and handkerchiefs of the apostles healed the sick, why was it not appropriate to venerate their icons. His letters were circulated to strengthen and prepare the people to answer the attacks of the heretics. Seeing this, the emperor wrote a letter in John's hand that had him condemned to the caliph for whom he worked. The caliph had his right hand cut off and hung in the market place. That night, John recovered his hand and prayed before an icon of the Theotokos, called of the three hands (http://www.balamand.edu.lb/theology/iconjon3hands.htm), promising that he would write hymns for Orthodoxy if he were healed. He slept, and she told him that he was healed and to write. The caliph freed him, and he became a humble monk. He wrote canons, troparia, idiomela, festal homilies for feast days of Jesus and the Theotokos, the saints and prophets. He established the Typikon, the order of services. He became the mouth piece of all the bishops of the east. He died peacefully at 104 years of age." - from the St. John of Damascus Institute site (http://www.balamand.edu.lb/theology/live_of_saint_john_of_damascus.htm) - for a longer account go there   Spiritual Writings: Exposition of the Faith (http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/3304.htm)   The video contains some of St. John Damascus' teachings on the Blessed Virgin Mary A Prayer of St. John of Damascus I stand before the gates of thy Temple, and yet I refrain not from my evil thoughts. But do thou, O Christ my God, who didst justify the publican, and hadst mercy on the Canaanite woman, and opened the gates of Paradise to the thief; open unto me the compassion of thy love toward mankind, and receive me as I approach and touch thee, like the sinful woman and the woman with the issue of blood; for the one, by embracing thy feet received the forgiveness of her sins, and the other by but touching the hem of thy garment was healed. And I, most sinful, dare to partake of thy whole Body. Let me not be consumed but receive me as thou didst receive them, and enlighten the perceptions of my soul, consuming the accusations of my sins; through the intercessions of Her that without stain gave Thee birth, and of the heavenly Powers; for thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

WOM#10 – The Liturgy of the Eucharist part 2 – The Way of Mystery with Deacon James Keating episode 10 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:23

Episode 10 -The Way of Mystery:  The Eucharist and Moral Living–  The Liturgy of the Eucharist part 2 : The True Meaning of "Full and Active Participation"...The Purpose of the Eucharistic Prayer(http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Keating-21-293x300.jpg) Deacon James Keating, PhD, the director of Theological Formation for the Institute for Priestly Formation, located at Creighton University, in Omaha, is making available to ”Discerning Hearts” and all who listen, his series of programs entitled “The Way of Mystery”. (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Eucharist-190x300.jpg)The Vatican II documents remind us that the spiritual journey is not made in a vacuum, that God has chosen to save us, not individually, but as The People of God. The Eucharist must help Christians to make their choices by discerning out of Christ's paschal mystery. For this process to take place, however, Christians must first understand how the Eucharist puts them in touch with Christ's passion, death, and resurrection, and what concrete implications being in touch with this mystery has for their daily lives.  USCCA28 – The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults with Archbishop George Lucas – Chap. 23 Life in Jesus part 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:42

USCCA28  Chapter 23  Life In Jesus part 3 (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Archbisop-George-Lucas.jpg) Archbishop Lucas offers insights on the US Catholic Catechism for Adults Chapter23: Conscience represents both the more general ability we have as human beings to know what is good and right and the concrete judgments we make in particular situations concerning what we should do or about what we have already done. Moral choices confront us with the decision to follow or depart from reason and the divine law. A good conscience makes judgments that conform to reason and the good that is willed by the Wisdom of God. A good conscience requires lifelong formation. Each baptized follower of Christ is obliged to form his or her conscience according to objective moral standards. The Word of God is a principal tool in the formation of conscience when it is assimilated by study, prayer, and practice. The prudent advice and good example of others support and enlighten our conscience. The authoritative teaching of the Church is an essential element in our conscience formation. Finally, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, combined with regular examination of our conscience, will help us develop a morally sensitive conscience.  IP#180 Adam English – The Saint Who Would Be Santa on Inside the Pages | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:06

Dr. Adam English has done an outstanding job of bringing to life the story of St. Nicholas of Myra.(http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Adam-English.jpg)  Going deep into the historical documents, he travails between the myths and the reality of this extraordinary bishop who would become an iconic saint.  I love this kind of read...steeped in rich history and filled with an enthusiastic joy for the adventure of discovery. (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/The-Saint-Who-Would-Be-Sant.jpg) The book can be found here (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1602586349/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=disceheart-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=1602586349&adid=00RR7Z1676RPJZY2ZMD0) "Adam English convinces us that the St. Nicholas we know is a cultural icon, as much Coca-Cola as Christian saint. But his real gift is in resurrecting through his painstaking historical detective work a flesh and blood St. Nicholas, whose courage and Christian generosity are worthy of emulation." --Greg Garrett, author of One Fine Potion "A sensitive, erudite, and accessibly written introduction to the life and times of St. Nicholas, a fourth-century bishop of Myra in what is now Turkey. Having devoted his life to serving Jesus Christ, the real St. Nicholas invites us to a truer and more joyful celebration of Christmas." --Matthew Levering, Professor of Theology, University of Dayton

IP#179 Vinny Flynn – 21 Ways to Worship on Inside the Pages | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:10

It was a delight to once again have a conversation with Vinny Flynn, who has authored "21 Ways to Worship:   A (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Vinny-Flynn.jpg)Guide to Eucharistic Adoration".  Short and to the point, the meditations brought forward by Vinny are  packed with aids to help us deepen our appreciation of this gift of the very presence of God.  Possibly undervalued as an important spiritual practice, Eucharistic adoration is an essential spiritual encounter for those who wish to truly enter into this Year of Faith.  Vinny's work helps those who wish to begin this vital devotion, and deepens the experience for those who have been fed by this practice over the years.  A don't miss...buy one for yourself  and one to leave in your church's Eucharist Chapel for others to enjoy. (http://www.discerninghearts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/21-WAYS-190x300.jpg) To find the book click here (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1884479448/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=disceheart-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=1884479448&adid=0DJB279QZJRH2S6ARDPY) “Vinny Flynn played an important role in my life of worship when I came back to the Catholic church. His new work, 21 Ways To Worship, has something for everyone when it comes to developing a life of intimacy with God. This is what we are going to be doing for eternity, so now is the time to begin.” ~Jeff Cavins “Vinny Flynn has done it again! With his fun, accessible, and faith-filled style, he gives us yet another key to unlocking the mystery of Christ’s Eucharistic love. This time, he shares the secrets to “keeping it real” before the Lord’s Real Presence. This book is more than just another devotional; it actually teaches us how to pray, and it does so in a way that’s holy, humorous, and human. Enjoy the book. Enjoy the Lord.” ~Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC Author, Consoling the Heart of Jesus and 33 Days to Morning Glory
