What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #173 Imagined harm and negative thinking about things you have never tried. So many families are struggling because of their dogs unwanted behavior and they just don't need to. The thing that is stopping them is the concept of imagined harm of something that they have not even tried.
I am often asked about what are the first things you should do when you get a new dog, most of these questions are around a dog that is not a puppy, so the philosophy is similar, for young puppies 8 weeks to 5 months, it is much different than the response for a dog older than 6 months. The best protocol is when you get a new dog is to spend the first 30 days, working on lots of structure, guidance, behavior, obedience, teach the dog what you want and what you don't want.
There is more and more nonsense going online these days when it comes to dog training. Lots of passionate folks pushing an agenda that unfortunately is hurting lots of dogs and dog owners in the short end and the long end. Folks pushing an agenda for all reward and no corrections and as far as even going as far as trying to pass laws that you cannot even say NO to your dog. If you want to eliminate, supress or lessen a dog from doing something you need to apply punishment

I love all the people that follow us and interact and comment on our social media. I love how we can be so helpful with all of our free videos and our Q & A sessions. I get this a lot though on photos mostly when we give a description of what the dog is struggling with. "that dogs sounds just like my dog, I am going to follow this story"
Set your dog up to fail. I know, most folks ave heard set your dog up to be succesful. We do that first, we do it over and over again and mark it and name it and do it again and again and reward, reward, and reward more. Then though what happens if the dog does know what to do if it does not do it, what happens when that deer goes by, that squirrel runs up a tree, the peson on the bike goes by you?
What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #168 I have lots of folks contacting me asking for recommendations for a dog trainer, because our social media reach I get requests from every single state in the US, Canada and many countries overseas. Unless I have seen someone work or know their work, i con't feel comfortable recommending anyone. Even with my recommendation I still tell folks to do your due dilegence since they may not be the correct fit for them.
There are lots of dogs that struggle with new things, new surfaces and new environmentals. What seems to be human nature is that folks will then also put on the breaks and try to coax the dog into doing what they are afraid of. We do a ton of food training, use tons of markers and do luring as well. When it comes to a few things though, like a dog navigating stairs, we have a different approach.

If you are having some or many behavioral issues with your dog and you find yourself referring to your dog as a "baby" or "fur baby" you are most likely going to struggle with the rehab process and at a minimum make it way more challenging and usually you are going to be encouraging and reinforcing the unwanted behavior and some of these behaviors are dangerous.
