Behind The Curtain

Summary: We all love a good movie, but what is it that goes into creating that movie, and we’re not necessarily talking about film making. Behind the Curtain is a truly original movie review show, that doesn’t always review the movie, but takes a look at what really happens behind the curtain.

Warning: Spoilers ahead – ‘Behind the Curtain’, unlike any other movie review show. Listen to Gareth and Alex as they dissect their favourite films in true Mind Set style. Asking the questions other shows are afraid to ask and revealing what’s hiding in plain sight. Altered States (1980) “Fight it, Eddie. You made it real, you can make it unreal.” Sealed into an isolation chamber Eddie Jessop shuts himself off from the world. With nothing but his mind to distract him he searches to find if ‘God’ really exists. Yet this is not enough for Eddie – He wants to ‘touch his creator’... When we dream is our mind simply piecing together random events or are there meanings behind the images? Is hallucination a dreamlike state that we can have whilst being fully conscious? If our minds literally create ‘reality’, as some scientists suggest, then perhaps dreams open the doorway to the ‘creator’. And if meeting ‘him’ could rip your world apart… Would you want to say hello? Warning: Spoilers ahead – ‘Behind the Curtain’, unlike any other movie review show. Listen to Gareth and Alex as they dissect their favourite films in true Mind Set style. Asking the questions other shows are afraid to ask and revealing what’s hiding in plain sight.   They Live (1988) “Put the glasses on! Put 'em on!” ‘They’ control us. But just who are these ‘people’? ‘They Live’ pulls the curtain back, exposing our puppeteers and the methods they use to control us. Just how much are we really in control of our lives..? You are a consumer. You buy to eat and work to buy, but have you stopped to wonder just how much choice you really have? What if everything you did was controlled? What if you are controlled? To many ‘They Live’ will seem little more than an average ‘sci-fi’ film. Yet to those who dare call themselves ‘awake’ this film has become a cult classic which reflects how we are controlled and just how detached we have become… Support Mind Set Central: [s2Member-PayPal-Button level="1" ccaps="" desc="Basic – Access to an All New Exclusive Pre-Show Podcast, and personally thanked (Show Credit) on The Mind Set Podcast." ps="paypal" lc="" cc="USD" dg="0" ns="1" custom="www.mindsetcentral.com" ta="0" tp="0" tt="D" ra="5.00" rp="1" rt="M" rr="1" rrt="" rra="1" image="http://www.mindsetcentral.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/subscribe_5.png" output="button" /] [s2Member-PayPal-Button level="2" ccaps="" desc="- Premium – Same as Basic but with Access to all show archives, Exclusive Podcast Content Only available to PREMIUM Members." ps="paypal" lc="" cc="USD" dg="0" ns="1" custom="www.mindsetcentral.com" ta="0" tp="0" tt="D" ra="10.00" rp="1" rt="M" rr="1" rrt="" rra="1" image="http://www.mindsetcentral.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/subscribe_10.png" output="button" /]

Prometheus (2012) “How far would you go to get your answers?.” Where did we come from? Why are we here? Through stunning visuals and dark corridors ‘Prometheus’ explores the notion of creation and the creator. But are we wise to search out our God and how far you would go to find ‘him’? Travelling to a distant planet, a mixed group of Wayland Corporation employees go to find life… Alien life. Written as a prequel to the 1979 blockbuster, Ridley Scott has returned once again to direct another chapter in the ‘Alien’ saga. Taking influences from real alternative history’s we are shown our ‘engineers’ and prompted to question our faith. Is the search ‘out there’ an excuse to avoid looking ‘within’? If you believe in God will ‘he’ believe in you? Catfish (2010) “It takes somebody that appreciates the art…” A photographer from New York, is flattered when a gifted child hundreds of miles away begins to paint his work. With his filmmaking friends a documentary of their relationship is born and we join them on their journey as he is also attracted to Megan, the elder sister. Yet all is not what it seems and we soon learn Megan is far from who she claims to be… Who do we give our trust to? How much of our online life is genuine? In our ‘modern’ age we are so plugged in to our virtual lives that we rarely take time to consider the face behind the profile. What if the person you thought was your friend, was really paid to monitor your behavior? Could you tell if a person was pretending to be of the opposite sex? How much of your life would you give to a stranger? Support Mind Set Central:

Warning: Spoilers ahead – ‘Behind the Curtain’, unlike any other movie review show. Listen to Gareth and Alex as they dissect their favourite films in true Mind Set style. Asking the questions other shows are afraid to ask and revealing what’s hiding in plain sight. The Great Dictator (1940) “Baloney." In ‘The Great Dictator’ Charlie Chaplin plays both a Jewish barber and Hynkel (a parody of Hitler). Released during the 2nd World War this film is as poignant now as it was then. By turning tragedy to comedy harsh realities fly past your eyes at an alarming rate – together with an ending speech that is a true classic. Charlie Chaplin: One of the world’s greatest clowns. Beginning with a tragic and poverty led childhood to a life where figureheads (from Churchill to Einstein) jostled to be seen next to him. An entertainer recognised globally, but one whose ‘political’ viewpoint led to him being exiled from the country that made him famous. A man born in the19th century, with a message for the 21st. Asking the questions other shows are afraid to ask and revealing what’s hiding in plain sight. Surrogates (2009) “We're not meant to experience the world through a machine.” The world is a ‘safer’ place when we live our lives through the eyes of machines. Or at least that’s what the people believe in ‘Surrogates’. Until, that is, a weapon is used that kills not only the machine but its user too. Would you choose a virtual life over your real one? Set in the near future perhaps the idea doesn’t seem so strange if we consider the use of social networks and video games today. To live ‘free’ from disease and with a body ‘designed’ the way you choose. Be beautiful and eternally young through your Surrogate – but at what cost? Would you offer your children a Surrogate or feel guilty if you did not? As our lives become ever more technological are we missing something? Support Mind Set Central:

The Avengers / Avengers Assemble (2012) “I still believe in heroes.” Building upon a series of successful Marvel superhero movies, The Avengers / Avengers Assemble brings together an unlikely group of ‘heroes’ and unites them against a common enemy. With so many egos at play this film could have easily fallen apart, yet it not only sticks together but forms a great action film… but what it is really telling us? In times of trouble people flock to entertainment, as a release from the harsh realities around them. Is this part of the reason that ‘Avengers Assemble’ total worldwide earnings have already exceeded $1Billion. What is a hero anyway – Are we worshipping the silver screens image more than those around us? If so – whose image are we being presented with? Support Mind Set Central:

Warning: Spoilers ahead – ‘Behind the Curtain’, unlike any other movie review show. Listen to Gareth and Alex as they dissect their favourite films in true Mind Set style. Asking the questions other shows are afraid to ask and revealing what’s hiding in plain sight. Eyes Wide Shut (1999) “Please, step forward.  May I have the password?” Dr ‘Bill’ Harford (Tom Cruise) is rich, successful and married to the beautiful Alice (Nicole Kidman). Yet with his last film, Stanley Kubrick shows us how thin the veneer is within this ‘perfect life’. Using sexual tension to draw us in we are exposed to the couple’s secret worlds away from prying eyes. With one veil being seductively removed after another we follow the Doctor along the path until we suddenly find ourselves lost and alone, in a dark and far more sinister place. Is this purely a work of fiction or was the Director, as some have said, showing us through the looking glass to a hidden society that exists within the shadows of our own? Asking the questions other shows are afraid to ask and revealing what’s hiding in plain sight. The Twelve Monkeys (1995) “Oh, wouldn't it be great if I was crazy? Then the world would be okay." Through ‘forced volunteering’ James Cole is sent back in time 1996 to collect evidence of the virus which all but wiped out humanity. On this mission he meets ‘The Army of the Twelve Monkeys’ and falls in love with a Psychiatrist who is convinced he’s ‘delusional’. It’s not easy being a time traveler. What happens to our sense of reality when we can ‘jump’ from one world to another? If time travel is possible are our minds capable of taking the journey and if they were, would we be considered mad by those around us? The Twelve Monkeys beautifully plays with the notion of madness and conforming to society norms. Given the choice would you prefer to be considered mad in world with love or sane in one without?

Asking the questions other shows are afraid to ask and revealing what’s hiding in plain sight. The Wicker Man (1973) “You’ll simply never understand the true nature of sacrifice…” Searching for a missing girl, Sgt. Howie is led to Summerisle. Isolated in the cold Scottish waters it is a place renowned for its fruit and harvest. A strong Christian and man of virtue the Sergeant has trouble dealing with the locals and their heathen ways. It not only the fruit that is different on Summerisle… This is a film that dares to question our established values and lifestyle. Hedonistic and intense at times yet peaceful and ‘civilised’ at others. ‘The Wicker Man’ is laced with symbolism and presents our ‘modern society’ with an alternative view of both life and death. Fearing the child is to be used as sacrifice, Pagan rituals and lust lead the Sergeant on a dance where the hunter becomes the hunted.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) “I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason.” Some might say that ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ is a film about an Alien Invasion and in some ways they would be right. Yet this is a film with so much more. Beautifully directed, shot and with an alien that we can relate to. It leads us to reflect upon who we are and how we develop as a race, the Human Race. Working on many levels this film has stood the test of time since its 1951 release. Underneath the surface story of an Alien who has come to warn us lays a deeper message of Biblical proportions, laced with prophecy, ‘miracle events’ and even reincarnation. Are we being told to watch the skies for danger, to be responsible with our science or that the greatest danger is within us all? Whichever answer you prefer remember these words just in case… ”Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!”

“Mr Anderson, I’ve been expecting you…” The Matrix is a modern day classic. One of the best action films you’re likely to see, whilst at same time dealing with the questions we all ask. Who are we, where are we going and why the hell is that Oracle woman always baking cookies? But is there more to The Matrix than meets the eye? Although its backdrop might be high tech, pulling us into its virtual world, The Matrix also tells an ancient story of Rebirth and ‘The One’. Laced with symbolism, conspiracy and double meanings we ask what ‘The Matrix’ is really trying to tell us? Are we free to choose our own path or is it sealed in Fate..?
