Topic covered on today's episode of Mind Set Daily "Facial Scanning Is Making Gains in Surveillance" The federal government is making progress on developing a surveillance system that would pair computers with video cameras to scan crowds and automatically identify people by their faces, according to newly disclosed documents and interviews with researchers working on the project. The Department of Homeland Security tested a crowd-scanning project called the Biometric Optical Surveillance System — or BOSS — last fall after two years of government-financed development. Although the system is not ready for use, researchers say they are making significant advances. It is going to be deployed for use soon and this technology is always billed as anti-terrorism, but then it drifts into other applications. They are contracting with several commercial space flight companies and plan to send their first satellite into orbit next year from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Eventually the company would like to offer people the ability to scatter their ashes on the moon or send them out into deep space. Some even want their ashes launched into the sun. After all we are all made of star dust, and there might be a few people who wish to go quietly into the night by sending their ashes into space. Topic covered on today's episode of Mind Set Daily "Google Eye Tracking" While the current incarnation of Google Glass continues to prompt worry and debate as far as privacy concerns go, the company is working behind the scenes on potentially much more disturbing technology, as revealed by a recent patent application. The patent filing describes a “head mounted device”, for example hi-tech glasses, that would have the ability to track eye movement, effectively monitoring reactions to external stimuli, including changes in emotion. The application also states that users would be able to access a “gazing log” that would track everything they had previously looked at, much like a web browser history log. Google’s long term obsession with monitoring users for advertising purposes has seen the company apply to patent all manner of bizarre technologies. The trash cans actually go ahead and utilize their internet connectivity to collect information from your smartphones without your permission (or any form of warning). The ‘Renew’ company behind the spy cans says that the Renew Pods track and collect a medley of information. Renew first tested the technology using 12 trash cans in May, but the story didn't get traction until last week when a sudden burst of publicity surrounding the "spy bins" put authorities on the defensive. As its currently configured, JLENS can reach an altitude of 10,000 feet and stay aloft for 30 days at a stretch, and its 360 degree sensor package can scan the air, land, and sea for up to 340 miles. Because of the low cost to deploy the unmanned blimps and the even lower cost of keeping them in the air, the system provides a far more durable and economical means of overhead radar surveillance for a military base or operation. Radar systems on the ground have problems detecting objects beneath a certain height. It’s not just for the military either. It could be used for pipeline monitoring, extra security at the World Cup or even by a police force. It would also be useful in disaster areas, where the normal communications networks are down. This information is often retained for years or even indefinitely, with few or no restrictions to protect privacy rights. In our society, it is a core principle that the government does not invade people’s privacy and collect information about citizens’ innocent activities just in case they do something wrong. Should clear regulations be put in place to keep the government from tracking our movements on such a massive scale? The graves contained skeletons whose heads had been severed and placed on their legs. This indicated to the archaeologists that the bodies had been subject to a ritualized execution designed to ensure the dead stayed dead. There's no consensus yet on when the bodies found in Poland were buried. One of the archaeologists on the site, said the skeletons were found with no jewelry, belt buckles, buttons or any other artifacts that might assist in providing a burial date. Ray Kurzweil, director of engineering at Google, also claims that the biological parts of our body will be replaced with mechanical parts and this could happen as early as 2100. Kurzweil made the claims during his conference speech at the Global Futures 2045 International Congress in New York recently. The conference talks about how the world will look by 2045. Kurzweil was invited to the conference because he has previously written books around the idea of singularity.
