Story 1 Stagefright-style vulnerability discovered in OS X and iOS, update for protection Security researchers last year discovered what they described as 'the worst Android vulnerability ever,' able to infect a phone with malware simply by sending an MMS message to it. The vulnerability, dubbed Stagefright, didn't even require people to open the message for their phone to be infected. A Cisco researcher has now discovered a similar vulnerability in OS X and iOS, that could allow an attacker to gain access to your stored passwords and files simply by sending you a malicious image file. http://9to5mac.com/2016/07/22/stagefright-mac-iphone-ipad/ ⬇︎ Reminder 2 x $20 iTunes / Apple gift card WINNERS will be chosen randomly from new iTunes reviews showing by Sunday August 7, 2016 ⬇︎ Story 2 The US Army is dumping Android for 'fast, smoother' iPhone 6s The US Army has decided to stop using Android devices and has instead switched to iPhones for its special operations forces that engage in unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, direct action, foreign internal defence and counterterrorism missions. Special forces make use of smartphones currently as a battlefield situational awareness tool. The USASOC has apparently become fed up with the Android because it often "freezes up" while performing tasks. http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-dumps-android-for-ip... ⬇︎ Story 3 BlackBerry CEO uses security summit to once more attack Apple's use of strong encryption There must be some kind of irony award for using a security summit to attack the use of strong encryption, and BlackBerry CEO John Chen seems determined to win it. Speaking at the BlackBerry Security Summit, Chen said that he is 'disturbed' by Apple's decision to work hard to keep its devices and messaging services secure, reports Patently Apple. This year shows Apple regaining the top spot, after last year's painfully abject slide into second place behind Google. Last quarter, the App Store made twice as much money than Google Play for app makers. Android has long had a problem generating good money for app developers. Many users would sooner look at ads than cough up for premium titles, and thanks to the ability to side-load software package, piracy is a massive issue. http://www.cultofmac.com/.../app-store-nets-devs-twice-as-mu.../ ⬇︎ Reminder $50 iTunes / Apple gift card WINNER will be chosen randomly from our Facebook Group that have re-tweeted the @AussieMacZone ⬇︎ Promote Aussie Tech Radio @ www.aussietechradio.com Aussie Tech Security Podcast and Aussie Tech Heads Podcast ⬇︎ How To 1 A handy little camera trick When using your BIG SLR camera total pictures of that lovely waterfall.
