355 Why You Should NOT Start A Podcast – My Thoughts Regarding Spencer Haw’s Blog Post On This Topic. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:51:50

This week's podcast episode is unique in several ways. First, I made the intentional decision to not use any audio clips within the podcast from beginning to end. I did this as a means of motivation for brand new podcasters who may be struggling to find the right music or audio branding for their podcast. My thought is that if you have content that is worth creating, you should not let something as little as not having any music keep you from sharing that content with the world. Also, I've never produced an episode of Podcast Answer Man that has gone this far over an hour in length. This episode is actually 1 hour and 52 minutes. However, I can't see a way that I would have been able to share what was on my mind without spending this amount of time on the topic. On Tuesday, April 29th, 2014, I was notified that my name had been mentioned in a blog post titled "Why You Should NOT Start a Podcast," written by Spencer Haws. In his blog post, Spencer shared his "very real and raw thoughts" about his own podcast and why he thinks many people shouldn’t start a podcast. A majority of this extremely lengthy episode is my full reaction to what Spencer shared in that blog post.     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start?  353 Can I Make Money If My Podcast Is Not A Business? How Long Can I Still Answer Every Email? Why Do I Not Recommend Using Your Media Host’s RSS Feed? And How To Avoid Interrupting Your Co-Host | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:00

Why Do I Not Recommend Using Your Media Host's RSS Feed? Several people have been emailing me, recently, telling me that they have been getting a lot of conflicting advice regarding which rss feed they should use. Specifically, there have been many folks that have been told that the best option for new podcasters, who are hosting with Libsyn, is to allow Libsyn to not only host their media files, but to also allow them to host the website and their rss feed for their podcast. I have been a supporter of Libsyn since 2006 and I am personally responsible for sending hundreds, if not thousands, of clients to their service. However, I have always, and still do, suggest that podcasters only use Libsyn for media hosting and stats alone. In this episode, I share exactly why I feel so strongly about this.     How To Avoid Interrupting Your Co-Host Gina wants to do a podcast with a co-host that is in a different location, via Skype. She wanted to know if I had any thoughts on how they can do this without constantly interrupting each other since they will not have the normal visual queues to go off of. I share my thoughts in this episode.     Can I Make Money If My Podcast Is Not A Business? Jeff called in and asked... "How can a sports talk podcast and website, which isn't a business, actually dive into the entrepreneurial aspects that you consistently talk about? IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE?" I certainly had a few thoughts to share, on this topic, in the episode.     How Long Can I Still Answer Every Email? Finally, my good friend, Butch Gibson, called in on the voice mail feedback hotline and left a 3 minute and 18 second voice message. His main point was how much he appreciated the fact that, even with the success that I have achieved, I still manage time to read the emails he sends to me and to send back a cordial response to each. Butch even made a point to say that I'm a "good guy" and that he's noticed that some other folks out there seem to go out of their way to be rude in response to some of the correspondence that he sends their way. The thoughts that I shared, in response to Butch's feedback, may shock some of my listeners. Listen to this episode to hear the thoughts that I shared.     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start?  352 Twitter Photos – Photo Tagging – Skype TX – Patreon – Naming New Studio And More! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:52

Twitter Photos & Tag Spam In this week's social media segment, Erik Fisher joins me to discuss Twitter's new ability to upload four pictures to a single tweet using their mobile application. We also talk about the ability to tag people in the photos you upload form the mobile Twitter app. This led us into a discussion about tag spam among other things.     Way of Life App for iOS Last week, I shared my greatest pet peeve with the Lift App. Thanks to my great friend, Kim Landwehr, I have started to use the Way of Life App for iOS. Listen to this episode to learn what I like this application so much and what habits I am attempting to make a part of my daily life.     Patreon For #PABL? In episode 573 of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I shared with my community that I'm considering the launch of a Patreon campaign to take my #PABL podcast to the next level.     Skype TX Many of you have asked me to give my opinion on the announcement of Skype TX. My opinion on this is that it is too early to have an opinion on this. When they finally release pricing and hardware specs, we'll have more to go on.     Congrats Troy & Wayne A big congratulations to Troy Heinritz and Wayne Henderson for the shout out of their Resurrection Revealed podcast that they received from 104.5 FM in Wilmington North Carolina.     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start?  351 On Air Signs – Shark Tank Podcast – And So Much More | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:24

Remote Controlled On Air Sign I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner. However, it recently occurred to me that I could use one of those WeMo switches by Belkin to operate a plugged in On Air Light/Sign that I could place just outside my studio. In fact, I may place a second remote controlled light on the main level of the house so that the rest of the family will know, upstairs, when I am actually recording something. I haven't chosen which Recording / On Air light that I am going to go with. However, I am looking for something that will look really nice. I've been looking at this and this. For those who prefer to go super low budget, I found this DIY On Air Light tutorial that shows you how you could make an On Air Light for less than $20.     Shark Tank Fan Podcast I am honored to have my great friend, Pierce Marrs, join me to talk about his experience with podcasting. I am a huge fan of the television show, Shark Tank and Pierce hosts a great Shark Tank Fan Podcast. I highly encourage you to listen to his interview with Barbara Corcoran, from the show.     Also In This Episode... I also shared my thoughts after attending the second annual Social Media Marketing World conference, my first Uber Experience, a frustration with the Lift App and the amazing opportunity to be on KUSI's Good Morning San Diego news show.     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start?  350 Ten Common Mistakes That New Podcasters Make And What To Do If You’ve Made Them – & Much Much More | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:02

Ten Common Mistakes That New Podcasters Make In this episode, of Podcast Answer Man, I share ten of the most common mistakes that I have seen thousands of brand new podcasters make. I not only share my thoughts on why these are mistakes, I also give suggestions of what you can do if you have made any of these mistakes yourself. A lot of knowledge but little passion for the topic No clear purpose/reason for doing the show / No Specific Goals Having the "Show Me The Money" attitude Expecting massive success at the launch of the podcast Focusing on stats instead of existing audience Not having a mailing list from the beginning Wanting to launch several shows at once Really bad audio quality Waiting to launch until everything is perfect! Not releasing your podcast as a .mp3 file.     Two Cool Web Apps For Podcasters I recently received an email from Regan STarr about a web app that he created that easily shows you the top 400 ranked podcasts in iTunes by Category and Subcategory. You can check that out by clicking here. While looking at Regan's site, I noticed he also had a cool web app for easily finding the rss feed for any podcast in iTunes. Check it out by clicking here.     Interview with Steve Lankford It was a huge honor to connect with Steve Lankford to talk about how things are going with his Health Quest Podcast. Steve was a student of my Podcasting A to Z course back in 2011 and he recently emailed me about reaching his 100th podcast episode milestone. I invited Steve to come and share some thoughts on his experience with podcasting over the past two years.     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start?  349 Dealing With Negative Feedback – How To Come Back From A Podfade – DropCam Pro Review | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:48

Dealing With Negative Feedback It's been a long time since I last covered the topic of dealing with negative feedback. Earlier this week, I was listening to the Jillian Michaels Show and she had an episode titled Haters Are Gonna Hate. In this episode, I shared about seven and a half minutes from Jillian's show and gave a few of my thoughts on the importance of discerning the difference between when someone has a legitimate criticism of your podcast and whether or not the person is simply projecting their own issues and problems on to you. (This topic starts at 00:48:47) I've actually talked about dealing with negative feedback with much greater detail in episode 106 of Podcast Answer Man. If this is a topic of interest to you, I highly encourage you to check out that episode. While I have received my share of extremely negative and hurtful criticism over the past several years, I don't usually share it in Podcast Answer Man. However, I did make an exception for episode 198 of Podcast Answer Man. If you want to hear a hater hating on me, I encourage you to check out that episode.     How Do I Recover From A Podfading Experience? Jonathan Gaby recently sent me an email saying, "I started a podcast several months ago and have succumbed to the dreaded pod-fade. Ugh, I know right? How embarrassing and humiliating. So, how does one gracefully and with mucho class recover and restart the podcast?" In this episode, I talk about what podfading is and I give several thoughts to consider when deciding how to move forward after you have abandoned your podcast audience. (00:08:22)     My Review of The Dropcam Pro For the past several weeks, I'd been looking out for a new gadget to geek out on. I had always been interested in the Dropcam Pro wifi enabled cameras. I recently decided to purchase a Dropcam Pro and I love it! In this episode, I share my thoughts on the this camera and the overall Dropcam experience.  348 The Episode I Almost Deleted | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:34

It's been a long time since I recorded an episode of Podcast Answer Man that I actually deleted. I have had a few episodes where I went back and re-recorded a section or two. There have even been a few episodes that I had to do some heavy editing on to turn them into something that I could be proud to publish. However, even with the a re-recorded intro and a little bit of editing, this episode almost didn't get published. I admit that I went into this episode with very little preparation, outside of a test run of the Fuze Box video conferencing service. I plan to return next week with a bit more preparation and some more "Can't Live Without Content."     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start?  347 Appear. In Free Peer to Peer Video Conferencing & The Podcast Movement Conference | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:46

Keynoting At The Podcast Movement In this episode, I talk with Jared Easley and Gary Leland who, together with Dan Franks and Mitch Todd, are putting together the new Podcast Movement National Podcasting Conference. During my conversation with Gary and Jared, I ask why they made the decision to start this conference. We also talked about the Kickstarter Campaign, the venue and other details about the event. I'm happy to announce that I have accepted the invitation to Keynote at the Podcast Movement and I hope to see you in Dallas on August 16th & 17th.     You Have To Check Out Appear. In Earlier this week, David Dell introduced me to a relatively new online video conference call service that is currently 100% free and requires no downloads at all. The service is called Appear.in. I shared a few brief details about this service in the opening of the show. However, it turned out that I got to try it out as an option for bringing guests into my podcast due to some technical difficulties with Skype. It worked great. After my conversation with Jared and Gary, I ended up going into greater detail about my experience with this cool, free, online application. Below is an image from test call that I did with Tim Arthur, Albert Hathazi and Jonathan Shank.     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start?  346 Should We Stop Using The Term Podcast? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:40

Why I Still Defend The Term PODCAST Matt Lovell is one of thirty students who are currnetly going through the 15th session of my Podcasting A to Z training course. Matt started a conversation inspired by something that he heard on Dan Miller's podcast. Dan had stated that, starting in 2014, he was no longer going to refer to his show as a podcast due to the fact that he feels that it "implies old technology." Matt wanted to know if I had any thoughts on this topic and suggested that it might even make a good topic to cover on Podcast Answer Man. I devoted a majority of this episode to sharing why I am such a strong defender of keeping and using the terms Podcast and Podcasting (Starts at 00:14:55)     Stepping Down From New Media Expo Some of you will recall that, back in episode 344, I announced I was shutting down the Podcast Mastermind. This week, I opened the episode with another major announcement. Effective last week, I resigned from my position as Director of Podcasting for New Media Expo. I am very proud of what was accomplished with the Podcasting Track for New Media Expo in such a short period of time. I am thrilled with the amount of energy and momentum that has built up around the Podcasting Community at this conference. As the popularity of podcasting grows, maintaining a high standard for the Podcasting Track will only require more time, effort and energy than I've already been investing into the Podcasting Track to get it to where it is today. Due to the goals and priorities that I have established for myself in 2014, It became clear that I would not be able to put the amount of time, effort and energy required to take the Podcast Mastermind and the Podcasting Track of New Media Expo to the Next Level. I have also been heavily invested in the concept of potentially hosting my own conference in 2015.     Podcasting A to Z Do you want to learn how to podcast but don't know where to start? Podcasting A to Z is a four week online training course that walks you through each step in the process of setting up a podcast. You not only get step-by-step tutorials, but you also have the ability to get answers to all your questions during the four week session. If you have been thinking about starting a podcast, this is the course for you. Just head over to http://PodcastingAtoZ.com for full details. I look forward to potentially working with you.     Upcoming Event Schedule One of my favorite things about traveling to, and speaking at conferences, is meeting members of my community. I always make it a point to host a community meetup wherever I travel. Below is a list of events that you might be interested in. If you can make it to any of these events, I'd love to have the opportunity to meet you. If you are not able to attend the event, but are in that area, I'd still love for you to come to the personal community meetup that I will host in that town.
