Party Time with Philip Clayton for “The Predicament of Belief” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:40:59

What happens when Homebrewed Christianity throws a party for the best book of the year? You don't have to guess, ya just gotta listen!  Be prepared for metaphysics, skepticism, atheism, Christology, religious experience, doubt, the death of God, Process thought, and all the theological hype money can buy! This week you get to visit the home of Philip Clayton, Dean of the Claremont School of Theology, where a bunch of theology nerds packed in and more streaming online while we celebrated the launch of Philip Clayton and Steven Knapp's book The Predicament of Belief: Science, Philosophy, and Faith. Philip has been on the podcast before live with Caputo, talking Jesus from the Emergent Village Theological Conversation, debating Creation, and 3-Ding at the American Academy of Religion.  Below is his co-author and friend Steven Knapp introducing the book and telling us a bit about its endeavour.   * SUPPORT the podcast by just getting anything on AMAZON through THIS LINK or you can get some Homespun Craftianity.  Theology Nerd Throwdown Takes the UCC to Alcatraz! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:46

Bo and I were invited to the United Church of Christ Annual Gathering to rock the Theology Nerd Throwdown.  We were joined by Erin Wyma, Thea Mateu, Mary Sue Brookshire, and Dave Palmer. Best of all they secured us a space at the Alcatraz Brewing Company for the late night theology party. There were about 40 UCCers and local HBC Deacons in attendance and then an Orange County brewery that packed full of people who had this conversation show up on there Friday night out.   We must give a big shout out to Deacon Billy Steele for coming all the way from North Carolina to be there in the flesh! In our conversation we discussed Obama's kill list, women in ministry, the growth of progressive churches, gay and polygamous marriage, partisan divisions, and prophetic preaching among other topics.  You will notice that these UCCers go silent like MSNBC when I give President Obama a hard time but after that they were rather open.  A couple of the Deacons in attendance said afterwards "this is what liberal Christians sound like." * SUPPORT the podcast by just getting anything on AMAZON through THIS LINK or you can get some Homespun Craftianity.  Profano Theology with Barry Taylor! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:27:00

Deacons I am thrilled to let you all in to a live HBC house-show & yard party with your favorite British PoMo theological and cultural super star Barry Taylor (check him on the podcast, with Peter Rollins on the Apostle Paul and at Theology After Google). The show is almost an hour and a half of interactive theology, inappropriate religious jokes, guitar strumming, Pop Culture commentary, & curse word Bingo (Barry will explain…I hear lay people at his church invented it).  If you can't imagine course language and thick sarcasm being use for something fruitful then please don't listen.  Pete Rollins may have his Pyro-theology but we got Profane Theology.  This was recorded September 30, 2011.   We discuss Scot McKnight's King Jesus Gospel, Peter Rollins, Mark Driscoll's Thug Jesus excitement, reality TV (and Christianity), Phyllis Tickle, Mel Gibson's love of the Jewish people, the Passion of the Christ, Rob Bell, Love Wins, Rick Warren, Shane Hipps, techno-noise, AC/DC, the Star Wars religion, changing religious data, skulls, and trash art. * SUPPORT the podcast by just getting anything on AMAZON through THIS LINK.  or you can get some Homespun Craftianity. We really appreciate your assistance in covering all the hosting fees which went up 30 bucks a month due to the growing Deaconate!    Dr. Barry Taylor is the Associate Rector at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills, California. He also teaches theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he is the Artist-in-Residence for the Brehm Center, and he teaches advertising and design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, topics that were part of his theological doctoral study program. He writes and plays music, usually with friends, occasionally for money – his songs have shown up in a few movies, and he has composed a couple of soundtracks for largely over-looked films. He has written a few books: A Matrix of Meaning with Craig Detweiler, A Heretic’s Guide to Eternity, with Spencer Burke, as well as his latest, Entertainment Theology.

The Crazy Gay-Hating Minister, Generational Hating, & Tony Jones’ Love of Nothing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:29

Theology Nerds Get READY to Throw Down!  This week Bo and I have a blast nerding out with abandon. During the episode we enjoyed the Art of Darkness & some Rocky Patel cigars. This episode is hockey style, coming in three periods. 1. The Crazy Gay-Hating Minister, Same-Sex Marriage, and Church\State battles.  This conversation kicked off with the rumble Rev. Charles L. Worley stirred up with his hate speech & Bo's big question post 'Is This Even Christianity?' Check out the podcast I recorded with fellow UCC minister Erin on homosexuality and the church. 2. Generational Hating and Radical Orthodoxy frustrations. Deacon Andrew Tatum wrote an amazing blog post 'Generational Blackmail or Tepid Pseudo Spirituality?' in response to a less-than awesome post (but generative question) by James K.A. Smith.  Since we recorded the question Barry Taylor joined in the conversation with style.  Oh and many thanks to Sarah for calling in. 3. Creation Out of Nothing, Moltmann & Process thought! In this section we discuss the Creatio ex Nihilio squabble Tony Jones started, my response, and the recent HBC podcast episode with 6 theologians debating Creation Out of Nothing. The end of the show is brought to you by the letter 'T.' * SUPPORT the podcast by just getting anything on AMAZON through THIS LINK.We really appreciate your assistance in covering all the hosting fees which went up 20 bucks a month due to the growing Deaconate! Enjoy. Here's Elizabeth Johnson's 1st and 2nd visit to the podcast.  She is the Catholic theologian Jack mentions as the one who got in trouble for attempting to counter the patriarchy in Classical theology.

This is the LAST TNT episode in the Homebrewed Podcast Feed!  Subscribe HERE to the Theology Nerd Throwdown podcast so you will continue to get the goodness like next week's episode with John Caputo!  The iTunes subscription is below. Why are people leaving Church?  Rachel Held Evans blogged it, Bo shared it, and now we discuss it.  Andrew Sullivan's post that got the conversation started 'Christianity in Crisis.'  In this conversation Tripp discusses three good reasons people are leaving the church Majoring in the Minors Lack of Intellectual Integrity Lack of Ethical Integrity and then questions the impact of age programed ministry through college on the decline of the church.  Why does Tripp have gay friends at Acts 29 churches? Then we move on to discussing Jesus and his disciples packing heat.  Bo previously blogged all the verses where Jesus mentions swords and then he 'Walter Wink's it' by discussing turn the other cheek. Tripp then wonders about metaphysical violence and Process philosophy.  We concluded by getting a little sermonic about the Biblical logic for universalism! * SUPPORT the podcast by just getting anything on AMAZON through THIS LINK.We really appreciate your assistance in covering all the hosting fees which went up 20 bucks a month due to the growing Deaconate!

Coming to Jesus with Daniel Kirk & Philip Clayton: Homebrewed Christianity 3-D | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:51:50

What does coming to Jesus look like today?  We may not have the answer but we do have a seriously fun and enlightening conversation. During the American Academy of Religion a herd of theology nerds gathered in the home of Mark Scandrette – Jesus Dojo extraordinaire – for some live Homebrewed Christianity podcast fun.  Daniel Kirk (New Testament Prof at Fuller Theological Seminary) and Philip Clayton (Philosophical Theologian and Dean of Claremont School of Theology) were our featured contributors but the crowd Deacons who gathered made the entire experience a blast. On top of the podcast we all enjoyed the wonderful food provided by the Scandrette family, the huge bottle of Bullet Bourbon from Rebekah, 3 amazing homebrews from Kirk, and some great questions at the end.  We hope you enjoy the live brew.  If you dig it you should make plans to join us February 12 at Claremont for John Caputo going 3-D or holla about hosting a show in your own homebarchurch. If you are wise….and of course you are…you should get Kirk’s new book Jesus Have I Loved, but Paul? and Phil’s freshest The Predicament of Belief.
