In Israel, military service is compulsory for most people over the age of 18, with men serving three years and women two. Exemption from military service is a hotly debated issue in Israeli society. Many feel that military service is a matter of family obligation and loyalty to their 'homeland'. For some, joining the army is about the connections they make. For many, life in Israel - with its military conscription and occupation - is turning young people into what one Israeli interviewee describes as “monsters in a distorted reality”, revealing deep psychological issues which remain unaddressed. The film reveals this agitation in Israel, at times manifesting itself through exodus, which is the very opposite of the Zionist dream.

As the colonial hold of the great powers began to fade and the region witnessed a wave of Arab nationalism, Syria shifted through a succession of military coups. But in 1970, Hafez al-Assad, an ambitious minister of defense, seized control. Rising from a humble background in western Syria, he was to rule the country for 30 years. His was an autocratic one-party state in which any dissent was ruthlessly suppressed. Following the death of Hafez in 2000, father was succeeded by son - Bashar al-Assad took the reigns and a dynasty was born. In 2011, with the region in revolt, the al-Assad regime was challenged.

Over the past decade, tens of thousands of Iraqis have fled their country to resettle in Sweden. Iraqi-born Swedes are today one of the largest ethnic minority groups living in Sweden.  Targeting Journalism | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2850

In many parts of the world, journalism is a profession under murderous assault. Nowhere has this been more true than in the Middle East in recent years. Figures compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists show an increase in the deaths of reporters covering the region, with 30 journalists killed in 2012 in Syria alone. The period between 1992 and 2012 saw the killings of 438 journalists in the Middle East and North Africa. Iraq was the deadliest assignment. Many journalists were kidnapped, and have never been heard from again. Others were lucky to have escaped with their lives. Targeting Journalism shows the challenges faced by Arab journalists today and highlights cases of reporters who have disappeared or been killed in Egypt, Iraq, Yemen and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Going Against The Grain | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2850

Gideon Levy is someone who evokes strong emotions from fellow Israelis. The writer and journalist has made weekly visits, over the past three decades, to the occupied Palestinian territories, describing what he sees - plainly and without propaganda. For some Israelis, he is seen as a brave disseminator of the truth. But many others condemn him as a propagandist for Hamas. And his columns for the Tel Aviv-based Haaretz newspaper have made him, arguably, one of the most hated men in Israel. Going Against The Grain follows Gideon Levy on one of his assignments in Hebron, and meets some of the ordinary Palestinians whose lives he has described in his regular column for Haaretz.
