What to make of Manchester United? Handsome victory over Feyenoord in the Europa League followed by yet another deeply frustrating home draw with West Ham in the Premier League. The domestic result leaves United 11 points behind the league leaders, with qualification for next season’s Champions League all but a rapidly fading dream. Ed & Paul look back on all the fallout from United’s two games this week, and ask what Mourinho can do to turn results around. Another game, another solid home performance in the Premier League, another draw. It’s becoming a pattern. Was José Mourinho’s side much better or Swansea City the worst team Manchester United has faced this season? Either way the Reds gained three absolutely vital points in Wales, Zlatan Ibrahimovic two goals and Paul Pogba a worldie strike. For once, supporters went home happy! United’s win in Wales was in stark contrast to the performance at Fenerbahce, where the Reds put in one of the worst away performances in Europe since, well, the last one. It’s the hope that kills you, right? Yet, the frustration in scoring just once from 24 shots at goal is not that Manchester United failed to beat Stoke City at Old Trafford, but that José Mourinho’s side should have won by a cricket score. United created “no sustained pressure,” claimed Stoke manager Mark Hughes. Who was he kidding; this was the Reds’ best performance of the season to date. (more…)
