He graduated from St. John’s College, Annapolis, MD (BA, 1975 and the California School of Professional Psychology San Diego (MA, PhD, 1981). He served as a psychologist in the US Navy, 1981-84. In 1985 he founded La Jolla-based Practical Recovery (www.practicalrecovery.com), an addiction treatment facility which offers a self-empowering alternative to traditional disease-model and 12-step-based treatment, across the full spectrum of addiction care: detox, residential, outpatient and sober living.
