This Week's StoriesGoodbye to Sets, hello to less suckingMicrosoft has shelved Sets for the long term (and likely, permanently). Tabbed "experiences" are still coming to the Console and likely Explorer (and Notepad?) To those wondering about claims that Sets isn't really dead, remember: This is exactly how they 'killed' Band 3 and Andromeda But long-live Microsoft Paint!Related: These two events (Sets, Paint) speak to the good and bad of Windows 10 today Good: Microsoft has removed most of what sucked in Windows 10 in version 1903! Bad: Inconsistency is rampant in the OS still. Just look at the icons and at the inconsistent application of Fluent design elements. Surprise: Windows 10 1903 is available (early) on MSDN! It showed up quietly a week ago. It's also on the Evaluation Center for those who know enough to look for it Meanwhile, 1903 remains in testing in the Release Preview ring and is due out in "late May"Microsoft's 'early' release of 1903 on MSDN seems to be linked to its call for devs to start writing for 1903 Related: MS is blocking 1903 on PCs with SD cards and/or USB devices inserted Who wants an EdgeBook? What if Chredge is really about making a true Chromebook competitor, one that is based around Microsoft and AAD accounts instead of Google?Semi-related: Chredge expands to 32-bit Windows 10.  WW 610: It Happened in Barcelona | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 1:54:25

HoloLens 2 at MWC As expected, Microsoft announces HoloLens 2 at MWC 2019. Paul goes hands-on. Mary Jo says it's all about the cloud. Azure Remote Rendering, Azure Spatial Anchors, Dynamics 365 apps and subscription pricing. Paul sees how it fits perfectly into the new Microsoft under Satya Nadella, hitting all of the AACO ("Accessibility, AI, Cloud, and Open") bullet-points that products need to survive there. Accessibility - This one is a bit light, but it's more accessible in the sense that it can more easily be used by anyone and without training or complex setup AI - Poster-child for Microsoft's AI prowess Cloud - HoloLens 2 won't ever be a direct money maker, instead, it's a supporting piece for Microsoft's cloud subscriptions Open: Open stores, open app support (including Firefox). Even anti-Microsoft veteran Tim Sweeney is on board, and he's insane. (What do we make of Microsoft's comments about "an open store" for HoloLens?) Inside scoop: Sources have confirmed that Microsoft had no idea what developers would do with HoloLens. But the market has spoken, and the games focus we saw during the 1.0 announcements were nowhere to be seen for v2. One more thing: Oh, Microsoft also announced Azure Kinect because it uses some of the same elements as HL2. All the Rest Build 2019 registration is open. Mixed reality is on the agenda (but no mention of Windows/Microsoft 365) Lite, Centaurus, Pegasus, Santorini, oh my: There was nothing announced at MWC, but Microsoft's post-Windows client future is becoming clearer every day. There were two more Windows 10 Insider Preview builds this past week • Chromium-based Edge preview should be coming soon. Microsoft will detail next-gen consoles at E3 this year Microsoft to bring xCloud, Game Pass to Nintendo Switch Xbox Spring 2019 Update revealed Tip of the week: Games with Gold for March is up App pick of the week: Google Fi Enterprise pick of the week: Windows Defender ATP finally supports Windows 7, 8.1 Enterprise pick No. 2 of the week: Even more new Dynamics 365 apps are coming Beer pick of the week: Torch and Crown Intersect Hosts: Leo Laporte, Mary Jo Foley, and Paul Thurrott Download or subscribe to this show at https://twit.tv/shows/windows-weekly Check out Paul's blog at thurrott.com Check out Mary Jo's blog at AllAboutMicrosoft.com The Windows Weekly theme music is courtesy of Carl Franklin. Microsoft announces new software, services, and PC partner hardware for education at BETT Windows 10 enters its final phase of deployment. What does that mean? What's going on with Windows Server 1903/19H1? A few incremental features have been announced. Is there more? Yet another Cumulative Update for 1809 went out this week (fourth Tues of the month) Bug bash for Win 10 19H1 starts today Support is ending for the last versions of Win 10 Mobile in December 2019 Microsoft pledges $500 million to help improve affordable housing in Redmond area.  WW 604: The Windows Caboose | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 1:59:58

Windows 7: The one-year support cutoff countdown begins One year from January 14, Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7 for free. (Only for pay). Is there any chance of an XP-like extension? Don't expect a huge upgrade wave. But Microsoft has a way around this... Microsoft is pushing Microsoft 365 (not simply Windows 10) as the upgrade path for Windows 7. Will folks bite? Free support for lots of other products expires on January 14, 2020, too: Office 2010, Windows Server 2008/R2, Exchange Server 2010, SharePoint Server 2010 and more. Related: Desktop App Assure is generally available. Will it convince Win7 users that their apps will likely work on Win 10? Related: PC sales have now fallen for seven years. But there is some good news too. Folding Windows, Dual-Screen Style A leaked build of Windows 10 19H1 indicates Microsoft is adding support for foldable (aka, dual screen) devices to Windows. What does this really mean? Is Andromeda in the wings? (NOPE). Meanwhile: Speculation mounts that Microsoft could show off the new HoloLens at MWC in February. Windows 10 Microsoft pushed a bunch of Cumulative Updates with loads of bug fixes for WIn 10 1703, 1709, 1803. It also (interestingly) pushed a small Cumulative Update with fixes for Win 10 19H1 Fast Ring build 18312. Microsoft's latest customer wins: Some patterns emerge Microsoft is having luck courting retailers who are scared of Amazon (See Kroger, Walmart and most recently, Walgreens). Good news for Azure, M365. Cortana was MIA at CES, but its "Virtual Assistant Accelerator" wasn't. MS gets its virtual assistant tech into BMW, UEI, LG Electronics. The $10 billion JEDI jackpot's coming up in April. Looking like an Amazon-Microsoft dogfight. MS keeps adding more govt. certifications leading up to it (Outlook Mobile is latest).
