A set inspired by this beautiful autumn season. The show begins with a new album by baritone sax player Gary Smuylyan featuring classic Italian songs. Next up is Jamie Baum with her alto flute and a wonderful composition and arrangement. That is followed by Ben Allison's interpretation of a John Lennon classic. Then we get into the autumn set with music from Ahmad Jamal, New York Voices, Cannonball, Avery Sharpe and Branford Marsalis. This show starts with a new release from the soulful jazz singer Gregory Porter. Next, we take you to eastern cultures with sitarist Anoushka Shanker and her new release which blends western and Indian influences. Then Kyrgyzstan born Eldar Djangerov has a new trio album showing off his piano skills. John Menegon and singer Teri Roiger bring us back home with some fine jazz. We finish out the show with Jimi Hendrix to celebrate his PBS American Classics feature that aired this week. New music from Kenny Garrett starts this show. Then Chick Corea takes over with his most recent CD and one of his earliest efforts. Next up is a nice set from Pat Metheny including his latest band Unity. The show wraps up with Pharaoh Sanders, new music from Tineke Postma and last but not least an old classic from Herbie Hancock.

Here is some jazz to go with your morning coffee. A lot of New England jazz artists are represented, like Frank Varella, John Funkhouser, Karen Frisk, Greg Abate and Noah Baerman. Also on this cast are guitarists John Scofield, Fabio Gouvea, Teneke Postma and the Next Collective.

Let's start with some classic modern jazz with two of the most influential jazz artists of all time. We'll start with the John Coltrane Quartet, and Trane's collaboration with MIlt Jackson. Miles follows with his muted horn on Bye Bye Blackbird. An assembly of modern NYC cats called the Next Collective lays down a cool vibe before Tineke Postma takes the podcast to a laid back ending.

There is nothing I enjoy more than hearing live jazz music. This show re-lives some of the great music I heard last week in NYC Jazz clubs and on stage at U of CT. From our NYC adventure, we heard the Ravi Coltrane Quartet and the Jimmy Greene Quartet. At UCONN, Earl MacDonald and his Creative Opportunity Workshop. We also hear from the musicians that accompanied these artists such as Dezron Douglas, Johnathan Blake, Renee Rosnes (The Drummonds) and John Pattitucci.

Multi-reed jazz musician Greg Abate joins In The Groove for the entire hour plus podcast. We talk about music, being on the road, and some of his latest projects. We'll hear some of his latest CD releases including collaborations with Phil Woods, Gary Smulyan and a Dave Brubeck tribute.

This show opens with a Trane tribute before we talk to Earl MacDonald, director of jazz studies at University of Connecticut. Earl's new CD, Mirror of the Mind creatively draws upon outside influences and incorporates cello into his ensemble. The CD is to be released October 15. At the conclusion of the interview we hear from Kris Allen, a frequent collaborator with MacDonald and finally Gary Burton with his new quartet.

This podcast is a continuation of last week's New Fusion feature. Vocalist Nicole Zuraitis opens the podcast followed by new music from Antonio Sanchez. You may not have heard the LeBoef Brothers or Russ Kaplan before, but they are both talented artists exploring new directions in music. Rez Abbasi and Rudresh Mahanthappa fuse a Middle Eastern sound with jazz sensibilities. Finaly Chris Potter and Ben Allison are represented, stretching this music in their own unique voices.

Jazz Fusion is alive and well as heard on In The Groove. This show is not about Fusion from the '70s, but fresh new fusion from modern players like Kevin Eubanks and Derrick Hodge. Also, some of the great originators of this genre, Dave Holland, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin, are still creating new sounds based as much on electric instrumentation and rock rhythms, as on their classical jazz roots.

This week's podcast is the second half of last week's show due to problems recording this weeks broadcast. We start with Royalty, a track from Chick Corea's new album Vigil. Then we hear a couple tracks from new albums from Netherland's talented sax player Tineke Postma, and bass artist Steve Swallow.

It was Wayne Shorter's 80th birthday this week, and to celebrate, we feature his music. This selection celebrates the diverse sound of Shorter's compositions, from hard bop, Brazilian influences, electronic fusion, to free jazz. We round out the show with music from Trane, McLean, Preminger and Burton.

We begin this podcast with a tribute to the passing of Cedar Walton and Marian McPartland. Hear Cedar's great standard Bolivia. McPartland follows with an excerpt from one of her Piano Jazz series with a gorgeous solo rendition of Trane's Naima. The show then continues with new music from Gary Burton and Chick Corea.

This show explores more great music with a Hartford connection. Albert Rivera doubles up on tenor with Hartford's Jimmy Greene to open the show. Matt DeChamplain is next up showing his incredible chops on solo piano. Maxine Martin plays and sings for us on her heartfelt new CD Fragments and Colors of Me. We hear from her collaborators on their own efforts from Warren Byrd and Sinan Bakir. Finally Kris Allen (alto sax) and Fabio Gouvea (guitar) close out the set.

We begin with a tribute to George Duke who passed this week before begining our Newport Recap show. Featured are recordings that highlight some of the best performances we heard at this years Newport Jazz Festival.
