 FOF #767 – The Internet's Most Viral Animals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2589

Everybody loves animals. Even if you don’t have a pet, you can’t help but ooh and aw over a dancing squirrel, a skateboarding dog or a cute cat.Is our collective fascination over animals a genuine interest in them, or part of a larger desire to see our own human qualities in the world around us?Cartoons draw on our fascination with seeing human attributes into everyday objects or animalsDisney built his entertainment company on this desire to see human qualities in mice, dogs and ducks. But equally we’re just as attracted to singing teapots, desk lamps or even a candelabra.Cuteness is irresistible. Shows like ours depend on stories of animals doing extraordinary things, acting like people or even learning to speak their own names. But there is a another edgier, wilder category of animal based culture, and that is online viral phenomena.Like Disney cartoons, these videos, moving graphics or pictures pull us in with animals doing human activitiy, but unlike Disney, they also tap into our darker psyche. Like a tune that gets into your head, these online nuggets haunt your dreams until you spread them to someone else.Who can forget The Hamster Dance, Tyson the Skateboarding dog, Badger Badger Badger, the dramatic hamster, Crazy Frog (a.k.a. Annoying Thing) or the whole LOLcat phenomenon?Their repetitive, insane quality both unnerve and entertain us in exciting new ways. It gives you that feeling that the internet is like no other medium that’s come before it. And you, your boss and your mom can both enjoy and talk about it.We owe a great deal to these artistic creations, some of them anonymous, who helped extend the functionality of the internet from just a information sharing network into a fully fledged entertainment medium.Amanda Steinstein gets a little whipped upOn today’s show Amanda Steinstein looking like a fierce panther herself, joins us to talk about viral animals, freaky over the top sexual fetishes, the Phoenix Mars Lander’s first-ever touchdown near Mars’ north pole, Steven Speilberg’s new social networking website is out of this world, virtual Ouija boards and a follow up on the high school student who asked us if watching Desperate Housewives means you’re gay.Does it?  FOF #685 – Peaches Christ Will Save You | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4232

WWPCW? What Would Peaches Christ Watch? A campy horror film with lots of gratuitous sex, violence and wild women on the verge of insanity, of course!Brainchild of filmmaker Joshua Grannell, Peaches Christ is well known in San Francisco for the 10-year-running Midnight Mass movie events where drag queens perform tacky skits before the screening of a campy feature film. The hilarious, insane and loosely scripted performances with outrageous costumes (check out her film-dress here) hark back to the hippie Cockette shows of the late 1960s. Peaches is our kind of gal!Peaches Christ's EyesDon’t let the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence inspired eye make-up fool you. Peaches Christ is dead serious about her love of film and the success of Midnight Mass is a testament to her passion for great movies and the value of a gay sensibility.Like our friend Curtis Jensen says, Peaches is a guardian of our culture: “Peaches is presenting a forum for the screening of these films that have always had a special layer of meaning for Queer audiences. I see her as a the queer equivalent of the Cinematheque in Paris, where for years film enthusiasts could be educated about film. She is educating a new generation of queers about the rich cultural heritage of camp and cult film.”So much in fact that in 2007, Peaches Christ celebrated the ten year anniversary of Midnight Mass with guest appearances by John Waters, Elvira, and Tura Satana. Campy celebrities love Peaches. So kids, grab a bucket of popcorn and take notes! Class is in session.Join Marc Felion and me Fausto Fernós as we talk with Peaches about some of the sickest, wildest and most hilarious movies of all time. Get your booty in high gear people. The most famous drag queen in the world, RuPaul joins us for real on today’s show.Well known for her 1993 chart topping release Supermodel, RuPaul Charles is still going on strong as a drag queen, comedian, musician and filmmaker.RuPaul literally became the first drag queen supermodel after the success of her original hit song “Supermodel” when MAC cosmetics launched their product line and made her their first cover girl. It’s impossible to measure the impact RuPaul’s career has had on gay culture and music as the incredible success of his debut album permanently made drag queens a mainstream fixture in films, movies, music and television. As RuPaul says in the interview, be careful what you put out there because your dreams can come true.Director Mike Ruiz & RuPaul as Cupcake in the new film "Starrbooty"On today’s show we talk to RuPaul from the city of Corpus Christi (birthplace of Selena) about her new film “Starrbooty,” a re-visioning of her 1987 original cult classic inspired by the works of Russ Meyer and John Waters. Back in the day when she was struggling to make it in New York City, RuPaul edited her own movie with two VCR decks and showed them around gay bars in the city. Now she’s doubled her cock budget, brought on some fancy lights and cameras, but “Starrbooty” is a film true to its original spirit of drag queen mayhem and fun. Don’t expect good acting here or believable plots, just a lot of over the top drag queens, blacksploitation references and huge cocks.RuPaul (left) and Lady Bunny (right) meet with a fanListen as RuPaul goes back, back BLACK to her roots to talk about about her early years in Atlanta Georgia, the costs of superstardom, her jousts with celebrities, being a lady in a man’s world, and the controversy surrounding her friendship with blackface comedian Shirley Q Liquor. You don’t want to miss this show.RuPaul’s new movie, Starrbooty, a re-visioning of her 1987 original cult classic is showing at Reeling: The Chicago Lesbian and Gay International Film Festival this Wednesday at 8pm at the Lakeshore Theater. Get your salad fork ready because New York City’s finest drag queen comedian, Hedda Lettuce is here! As Hedda says, why be forced to choose between Hillary and Barack, when you can have both?Fausto Fernós, Hedda Lettuce and Marc FelionPictured here is a wonderful photo of the three of us taken by Sal-E at the Lakeshore Theater last month. Hedda’s show was hysterically funny as she spontaneously went from ribbing a gay couple sitting in the front row to being pummeled by twinkies.A ton of Chicago drag celebrities were there, including Sal-E, Kevin Aviance, Tina Torch, Velicity and Teriyaki. Why Velicity chose such a hard name to understand is beyond me, but Hedda explains it all.ATTENTION New York City listeners! Go check out Hedda’s hilarious act tomorrow night at the Vlada Lounge in the Hell’s Kitchen Neighborhood. Hedda is hilarious, you wont be disappointed. Show starts at 10pm. Vlada is one of my favorite places to visit, with cute customers and a fantastic selection of flavored, all-natural vodkas. Try a margarita made with gingered vodka.  FOF #101 - Holly Woodlawn: A Low Life in High Heels (part 2) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3045

Holly Woodlawn returns! You wanted more, you got it! Today we have part two of our fabulous conversation with THE Andy Warhol Superstar, the legendary Holly Woodlawn who talks about what kind of food she would be made from if Madame Tussot's Wax Museum were to make a sculpture of her out of food (like the chocolate Elton John statue.)Also on today's show Marc and Fausto talk about the brand-new iTunes 4.9 and why it's getting all the podcasters (people like us) panties in a bunch. But don't worry, we're not going anywhere! Part 2 of 2.

FOF #100 - Holly Woodlawn: A Low Life in High Heels (part 1) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3239

Today we celebrate our 100th show with a fabulous conversation with the film actress, cabaret signer, author and living legend Holly Woodlawn about her book "A Low Life in High Heels" that's being made into a film.Holly Woodlawn was one of the first breakout Andy Warhol Superstars -people who were famous in New York in the late 70's for being their outrageous selves, and for being in his (actually Paul Morrisey's) films. They're the ones who started the saying "Famous for Fifteen Minutes," which mean that fame was short-lived and that celebrites had a tendency to burn bright and die young. What makes Holly Woodlawn even more extraordinary is that she has outlasted a lot of her peers because of luck, sheer will, and a generous optimism and love for humanity.Listen as two generations of Puerto Rican drag queens (Fausto and Holly) match wits, widsom and warmth in this truly fab interview. (Part 1 of 2)
