We can try to tame coronavirus by building our immunity, but terrorists keep popping up all over - this week in Afghanistan, Spain, Italy and California. The ink was barely dry on a peace treaty in coronavirus-torn Afghanistan when three terrorist attacks on the same day shook hope of its success. Though the Taliban denied responsibility, they haven’t condemned these lethal attacks on a maternity hospital, funeral and market. In Spain another terrorist was captured. Unlike Abdel Bary who used the coronavirus lockdown to hide out behind a mask, this terrorist, a Moroccan ISIS follower, came to police attention by repeatedly breaking lockdown rules to scout locations for a terror attack. In Italy, a nurse on her way home from her job treating coronavirus patients, was raped by an illegal migrant from Senegal. And lastly, Tahawwur Rana, incarcerated in a California federal prison for his role in supporting the terror group that carried out the Mumbai attack, is asking for compassionate release because he’s positive for Covid-19.

Yep, I know I’m freeking hilarious anyway, now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and the history of marijuana and funeral rites with a side of Memorial Day. Hot on the discovery of evidence that the first marijuana plant popped out of the ground on the Tibetan plateau 28 million years ago comes evidence of pot smoking and heavy group inhaling at a funeral in the Pamir Mountains of Central Asia about 2,500 years ago. Was this a way to help the mourning with their grief, celebrate the passing of a friend or promote more funerals? This phytochemical analysis indicates that cannabis plants were burned in wooden braziers during mortuary ceremonies at the Jirzankal Cemetery (ca. 500 BCE) in the eastern Pamirs region. This suggests cannabis was smoked as part of ritual and/or religious activities in western China by at least 2500 years ago and that the cannabis plants produced high levels of psychoactive compounds.

When his dad was extradited to the U.S. for his role in blowing up the American embassy in Africa, Abdel Bary joined ISIS. Abdel Bary is a fascinating character. Filled with rage against authority because of his dad’s years of imprisonment on terror charges, and the consequent impoverishment of his family, he became a jihadi rap artist, with lyrics such as, “The day they came and took my dad, I could have killed a cop or two.” Dr. Carole analyzes more of his lyrics and his angry posts on social media to give you deeper insight into his mind. International counterterrorism authorities have been on the hunt for Abdel Bary, who once posted a picture of himself holding the severed head of a Syrian soldier, captioned “Chillin’ with my other homie, or what’s left of him.” They suspected he'd eventually return to Europe, possibly to perpetrate a terror attack. Indeed, if it hadn’t been for his elfin ears, he might have evaded capture and done just that!
