 D P BuZZ - August 12, 2010 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:00:00

Join host Larry Jordan, and co-host Michael Horton, as they talk with: Eddie Schmidt, President of the Board of the International Documentary Association (IDA), follows our conversation from last week with Jack Lerner, professor of law at USC, about the recent win for filmmakers at the U.S. Copyright Office. Theoretically, we have Fair Use rights to just about anything on copy-protected DVDs. But, the real-world isn't that simple. Eddie joins us to discuss what are rights are, how we can use them, and what's still missing. Ken Jones, producer of Calaveras Gold TV, creates programs for community television. This means shows on a budget, but it doesn't necessary mean shows that look cheap. Ken stops by to explain his production process. Michael Towe, is the Founder of M2 Digital Post in San Diego. Founded to serve the needs of the corporate and commercial world in San Diego, Michael has found a new niche creating weekly podcasts targeted at the medical market. We take a break from the law to learn how he produces a web show a week, and what makes it successful. Jessica Sitomer, president of The Greenlight Coach, helps production folks find work. We like people like Jessica, which is why we keep asking her back. This week, we want her advice on finding work when no one seems to want to hire. (Plan to take notes) You can't find people or interviews like this anywhere else! It's another fascinating show - all the information you need now to know what's coming next

Join host Larry Jordan, and co-host Michael Horton, as they talk with: Jack Lerner, Director of the Intellectual Property and Technology Clinic won a major victory on the definition of Fair Use last week with the U.S. Copyright Office. Although this may sound arcane, this ruling has a direct and beneficial impact on anyone creating documentary or corporate videos. We invited Professor Lerner to stop by this week to explain the significance of this ruling - which took years to achieve! Jonathan Handel, Of Counsel at Troy/Gould, and the resident legal correspondent for The Buzz joins us to provide his perspective on last week's Copyright Office ruling. (Like we said, this is a MAJOR victory for filmmakers. You need to tune in this week to learn why.) Terri Lloyd is a Digital Fine Artist who communicates her very strong opinions through her art. She began her love affair with digital art and communications in 1987. Since then, she uses computers and software as tools that help other “creatives” sell themselves through the use of graphic digital resumes. We talk with her this week about creative ways to find work, the fine arts process, and her off-beat sense of humor. Bruce Nazarian, President of the International Digital Media Alliance, and another of our Regular Correspondents, rounds out our coverage of the Copyright Office ruling. While Jack and Jonathan look at it from the legal perspective, Bruce provides his take on the impact from a producer and creative point of view. You can't find people or interviews like this anywhere else! It's another fascinating show - all the information you need now to know what's coming next!

Martin Baker, CEO of Digital Heaven, is a London-based developer of plug-ins for Final Cut Pro and a long-time friend of The Buzz. This week, we talk with him about his favorite Final Cut Pro tips, and a new product directory called "Final Cutters." Sandrew invented the first all-digital process for film colorization in 1986. He then evolved that process in 2001 at Legend 3D, where they convert 2D movies into 3D. Recently, his company helped in converting "Alice in Wonderland" into 3D. Toni Pace is the senior visual effects producer at Legend 3D and assists in tracking all the elements that make 3D possible. This week, we talk with both of them about the process of converting 2D films into 3D, the fascinating relationship between colorizing a movie and converting it to 3D, and the implications of converting older films into this new 3D format. Jared Picune, vp of sales and marketing for CalDigit, joins us to talk about storage. CalDigit is known for providing gear with blazingly fast speeds at relatively low cost. Jared joins us to explain their latest technology and what we need to know now to take advantage of it. Jess Furman is a singer/songwriter/producer who stands out from the music crowd in a big way. She is one of the 375,000 members of ASCAP, and recently was singled out for an interview on NPR about music licensing, royalties, rights, etc... We spend a lot of time talking about video, this week we want to learn more about creating music, pitching songs, licensing music, and marketing your musical talents. Jess has some greeat opinions on all of this. Ed Brando, product manager for Whites Interactive, knows production gear. In fact, with more the 14 years in the industry, he helps independent filmmakers get the gear they need. Now, however, he joins us to talk about a new trend - production specifically for the web. Smaller crews, less gear, and MUCH smaller budgets - yet with a strong need for high-quality production. You can't find people or interviews like this anywhere else! Join host Larry Jordan, and co-host Michael Horton, as they talk with: Jonathan Handel, Of Counsel at Troy/Gould, is a regular on our show talking about legal issues. We were deeply troubled to read this week of legal challenges to Joe Berlinger, a filmmaker who made a documentary about a class action lawsuit against Chevron's oil operation in Ecuador. Chevron is demanding all Joe's outtakes as part of their legal defense. Is this an issue of First Amendment rights, or trying to uncover the truth? The Court of Appeals will decide. And the impact for filmmakers could not be more significant. Tune in this week to learn more about this critical issue. Paul Jordan is the Digital Archivist for the International Monetary Fund. As part of the Fund's efforts to make their actions transparent, he works to acquire and process the records of the Fund, and most importantly make sure that they remain accessible over the coming decades. He likes to say that his job is him versus seventy million digital documents, and so far, the documents are winning. We talk with him this week about the various hardware options filmmakers have to preserve their digital assets. Tom Dixon,VP of Marketing, and Tom McAndrew, Pro Audio Manager for North America, for DTS, Inc, join us to talk about surround audio. DTS is justly famous for the high quality of its theatrical decoders. However, DTS recently has expanded into hundreds of consumer devices and, most recently, to the web. This week, we want to learn how surround sound on the web works! Philip Hodgetts, CEO of Intelligent Assistance, is one of our favorite regulars. This week, he returns with a look at Adobe's increasing support of metadata in their CS5 products. As we continue moving to tapeless media, metadata is how we are going to keep track of everything. Philip explains why. You can't find people or interviews like this anywhere else! It's another fascinating show - all the information you need now to know what's coming next!

Join host Larry Jordan, and co-host Michael Horton, as they talk with: Evelyn McLellan, Systems Archivist for Artefactual Systems, is a professional archivist working on a number of open source projects to simplify the process of archiving our media. She has some great suggestions on what format to use for archiving media, how and where to store it, what software to use for archiving, and how to pick the best system. Her job isn’t to sell gear, but to help us figure out how to best preserve our media for the distant future. We are REALLY looking forward to what she has to say. Kathy Kolla, Director/Screenwriter for Cola Kat, has worked on a wide variety of projects from comedic shorts, to commercials, to documentaries; with occasional side-trips into the “Party Life” of LA. Our favorite jobs coach, Jessica Sitomer, is back to talk about new ideas on getting work. When you think about it, the same skills you need to produce a film you also need to use in finding work in the first place - courage, independence, perseverance, and creativity. Sounds like a recipe of success to us! You can’t find people or interviews like this anywhere else! It’s another fascinating show — all the information you need now to know what’s coming next!

Join host Larry Jordan, and co-host Michael Horton, as they talk with: Simon Walker is a freelance trainer based in London, England. As both an Apple-Certified Master Trainer and editor, we wanted to talk with him about how students are changing in the UK, why he's teaching a 10-week course on plug-ins, and the impact of editing video on an iPhone (as he did the day the iPhone 4 was released last week). Lyndon Faulkner, president/CEO of Pelican Products, lives and breathes getting your gear safely from one place to another. This week we want to know how to pick the best shipping container for our gear, what's the latest in shipping technology, and what's the best way to keep all our expensive equipment safe. Mark Davis, CEO of Scenios, is working with a team of producers and programmers to develop a digital asset management system specifically designed for filmmakers.
