The Unknown Studio show

The Unknown Studio

Summary: Every two weeks, Adam and Scott expound upon... well, whatever suits them. They feature guests from all over the place, but they tend to focus on what's going on in Edmonton, that strange, silly city/small town rooted in the middle of the Canadian Prairies. Their focus may be local, but they discuss topics from a more generalized perspective. And somehow, they also almost always wind up talking about Star Trek.

 The Musical John Estacio | S03E14 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:28

If you’re in Edmonton and you don’t know who John Estacio is, you’re about to get an education, my friends. John is a music composer based out of Edmonton. He’s been a composer-in-residence at the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, he’s written operas and at least one movie score, and he’s a really incredibly nice, and interesting guy. His […]

 Canada is videogames | S03E13 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:48:35

If you’ve lived in Canada for even just a few months, you’ve probably heard someone say something like, “Canada is hockey.” And while I heartily believe that’s true, there’s something else that Canada is that I think gets overlooked by the mainstream public: Canada is videogames. With over 200 game studios in the country, we’re […]

It all starts with the weather | S03E12 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:55

You know what they say about the weather in Alberta? If you don’t like it, just wait five minutes. This most recent episode of the show is much the same: if you don’t like what you’re hearing, wait five minutes. Scott and I did this show solo for a few reasons — we weren’t able […]

 Sexy Party Time | S03E10 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:15

Nothing beats Valentine’s Day. Except maybe Christmas. And Halloween. AND THIS PODCAST. But we’re all about celebrating V-Day all the same. And in order to do so, we invited Lauren Albrecht, the voice of Sex Talk (one of our old segments) to come on the show and talk to us about her Masters research — […]

 The Flu Episode | S03E09 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

When we were supposed to record our previous episode, Scott fell ill. Like, really ill. He was confined to his bed and ordered to drink endless cups of Gingerale, and not to record any podcasts, lest he throw up on our equipment. But we still had a whole bunch of segments we wanted to share […]

 Gord-o-Vision | S03E08 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:25

He’s tall, he’s handsome, he’s an entrepreneur and TV nut, and he’s a recent dad. In this latest episode of the Unknown Studio, Scott and I spoke with Gord Lacey — founder and editor of TVShowsonDVD.com. Gord explains how he stumbled on success (hint: it wasn’t the pursuit of dollars), some of the best and […]

 The classiest Claus | S03E07.5 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

From stalwart podcast contributor Jonn Kmech: It was with a sense of child-like glee and adult-like anxiety that I waited outside the Santa workshop at Southgate Mall last week. The anxiety? Due to the very nature of being an adult male, schlepping about a Santa compound and observing children as they come out from meeting […]

 T’was an Unknown Christmas | S03E07 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21:34

Merry Christmas, everyone! In this very special Christmas episode of the Unknown Studio, Scott and I chat with Jonn and Sam, two of the creators of the Edmonton: A City podcast segment. And wouldn’t you know it, but they have a segment in this very episode! There’s also some other tidbits in here from Scott […]

 Word rhyming | S03E06 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:52

I don’t know much about poetry, except that I can’t write it unless it’s a limerick. And even then, no one wants to hear “The once was a boy named Runt…” You know who can write poetry? Very well? Edmonton’s own Kasia Gawlak. (You may know her from such events as Words with Friends, which […]

 Mayor of Toontown | S03E05 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:11

It’s time your your favourite podcast, my friends. And this one’s a doozy. Not just because it includes a peek into the Unknown Studio mailbag (which it does); not just because it includes a story from the Christmas Bureau (which it does); and not just because it includes the inaugural Edmonton: A City segment, brought […]

 Comics! Pow! | S03E04 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:28:31

Have you ever sailed in a Happy Harbor? Scott and I have. We did so in this, our most recent episode, where we interview Jay Bardyla, proprietor and local giant at Happy Harbor Comics. They just relocated their downtown store to 107 Street and 104 Avenue. A lovely store that you should visit (they have […]

 Real Bloodsuckers | S03E03 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:39

It’s almost that time of year again, friends. Oh yes, the time when things get a little cooler, and just a LITTLE more terrifying out there. It’s nearly everyone’s favourite time of year: Halloween! And we’ve got a great show for you this Halloween. No time to write the breakdown, but I’ll tell you this: […]

 New Planet Discovered! | S03E02 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:26:11

It’s true, scientists (not really) have discovered a new planet (sorta). A planet called Kikki. In this episode, we speak with Kathleen Smith (aka @kikkiplanet) about the launch of her new website this Friday. She’s an interesting woman, and she wants to share the interesting stories that make Edmonton a great place. Oh sure, she’s […]

 Paula-tics | S03E01 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:44:16

Welcome back, listeners, to a bright, new and shiny season of the Unknown Studio! [holds for applause.] We decided to kick off the season with a guest who barely needs an introduction. You might remember her from such newspapers as the Edmonton Journal. You may have even read some of her blog posts over at […]
