We're honored to welcome back a favorite guest of Beyond Worlds, Robert M. Place! Tonight, a topic about which Bob is writing a book: the Western System of soul centers, what we can call the "chakras" in English. We will use the Tarot to analyze & heal the centers. Most people believe that the chakra system is something we borrowed from India in the 20th century, but we have had similar systems since ancient Greece. It is connected to common sevenfold aspects of our culture, such as the seven days of the week, the seven notes of the scale, the seven virtues, & seven vices. Bob gave a workshop on this at the Readers Studio and an advanced workshop on it in New York last November. He will be repeating that workshop on Saturday, January 29. In 2010, Robert Swiryn released his new book, The Secret of the Tarot, How the Story of the Cathars was Concealed in the Tarot of Marseilles. The book took over five years to complete, and was the product of a synthesis of Swiryn’s long-time interests in art and religion. In the thirteenth century, the Cathars, a group of Christian heretics, became the target of the Roman Catholic Church. The pope enlisted the help of the King of France, and together they began a campaign of brutal persecution which started during the Albigensian Crusade and ended in the formation of the Inquisition. The efficiency of those programs led most scholars to believe that the Cathars were all but annihilated. However, evidence points to the survival of some refugees who fled to areas like Lombardy, in Italy, where they were sheltered by more sympathetic religious sects. In The Secret of the Tarot, Robert Swiryn offers a glimpse into the background of the Cathars and their medieval world, and how it was turned upside down by the political and religious powers of the time. But the unique factor of this thought-provoking book is found in Swiryn’s interpretation of the imagery of the tarot cards within this historical context. In Part II, he describes how the tarot provides a visual account of the personalities, events and spiritual ideals of the Cathar faithful. We're honored to have Rachel Pollack join us again tonight, this time to talk about unusual tarot interpretations and Tarot stories, or midrash. So what is Tarot Midrash? A midrash is a story that expands on a moment in the Bible. the story of Adam and Eve is very short in Genesis, but thousands of pages have been written about it. the official meanings for any Tarot card are actually very limited, but we go very deeply into the picture, into possibilities, speculations, details, and so on. Rachel explains, "In some ways, the idea of odd interpretations is a midrash idea, that is, meanings that are not part of the original design or concepts, but are a meaningful and valuable extension. Some of the myths I cite in Tarot Wisdom are midrash, both originally (that is, not in the Bible) and for Tarot, since it's unlikely that say, Rapunzel was in the mind of the Tarot creators. But even more narrowly, when we talk about how the woman on the Rider 8 of Swords can walk away from the swords that is not strictly in the picture and so is a kind of midrash.
