CAPTAIN PHILLIPS is director Paul Greengrass's multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is – through Greengrass's distinctive lens – simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Set on an incontrovertible collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men will find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. The film is directed by Academy Award® nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. The Broken Circle Breakdown is an unexpectedly beautiful musical parable about the contradictions of the universe. Rooted almost completely in a reality that seems like our own, it strips down the tropes of the Hollywood musical to paint an effective portrait of love, despair and pain. Elise and Didier fall in love, they sing together in a band, they have a beautiful daughter and then she falls ill; changing all what they knew about the universe. Using a non-linear format and beautifully utilized musical sequences, the film paints an exaggerated portrait of faith and love in the face of chaos.

Director Destiny Ekaragha discusses her comedy Gone Too Far!, backed by the BFI Film Fund, at the London Film Festival programme launch. Adapted from Bola Agbaje's Olivier Award-winning play, the film follows the simmering adolescent passions and undercurrents of racial tension at play between a group of South London teenagers.

The Festival opens on 9 October 2013 with the European premiere of Paul Greengrass’s new thriller, Captain Phillips. Greengrass attended the launch event alongside other British directors with films in the Festival, including Anthony Wilcox (Hello Carter), Destiny Ekaragha (Gone Too Far!), Bruce Goodison (Leave to Remain) and Adam Wimpenny (Blackwood).
