Even in our situations as they currently stand most of our life needs are being met. we can feed ourselves. We have a roof over our head. It may be a struggle. It may be troublesome right now, but we at least have those basic needs met and it’s that stability that allows us to think about these other-other ways and other wants, needs, and desires in our lives. It also allows you to look out there and see transition not as a threat but as an opportunity. This is an opportunity — and it sounds like a cliche, I know — “This layoff is an opportunity for you!” Right? It doesn’t feel like it at the time. It feels so bad and so scary and so frightening. It is an opportunity. I discuss the Career Compass method of discovering your career wants, needs and desires and then using various social media tools to show people “What you do and how well you do it” Transcript: Once you figure out what you want to do, how do you do it? What are the steps? What are the ways that you take the Career Compass and use it to development a career — like my own, if you want — out of a mish-mash — anyone who looks at it from the outside sees nothing but a mishmash. The fact is, it took me years to figure out what everything relates to in my career. The fact is, everything I do relates to education. I don’t’ teach in the classroom. Beyond presentations like this, but everything I do has something to do with education. I love teaching people about things. It used to be technology almost fully. I used to do work in a corporate IT department. Then I started working in people’s homes, small offices, stuff like that. Started talking about it. Started writing about it, but everything over the years finally revealed to me that I do education and you’re going to need to figure out that same thing. Stability itself is not really the goal and probably never has been, because if you know anyone who is totally stable they’re probably, in most cases, bored out of their mind. They may tell you that. They may not tell you that, but they get up, they got to work, they do the job, the go to lunch, do the afternoon, come home watch tv, have dinner, watch tv and go to bed. Cycle and repeat. And you’ll often hear from them, verbally, “God, I’m so bored. Uggg.” Because they have stability. Yea! Great thing to have. Wonderful. And you hate your life. We don’t — it’s conflicting ideas. We’re taught that stability is good. Stability is normal. Stability is solid, but it can also lead to a life that’s just not really interesting and a life where you’re not achieving everything that you could achieve. They choose the default, cliché, corporate, what their parents thought, whatever answer of the period and if they try to go against that it causes them angst. It’s like “How do I not do this? How do I not do what everyone says I should be doing” Well because it’s not right for you and that’s the important thing you have to learn. If it’s not right for you. How cliché can it be. It’s the square peg in the round hole. You know, you’ve got to watch that, because that is not really a great time to be making such a major decision in your life. If you are making that decision, be sure you step away and think about it first. I liken this to a mind map — how many people use mind mapping? Gosh, it’s fallen out of favor. It’s one of those things you either love or hate. I come and go with it. It’s sort of like that. It’s basically just a blank form that you can start to fill in and start to trigger other thoughts. It can increase your thinking by quite a large amount. So, when an opportunity comes to you, please, come back here. Evaluate it against the compass. It’s going to tell you right away actually once you break out what that opportunity entails. It’s going to be very clear immediately — “Ok. No no, it’s got too many bads or it’s really good. Maybe I should investigate this further.” And that helps a lot because it helps to get around that analysis paralysis I talked about earlier. That having too many options. Sometimes you just need to go — when that would happen when I was working in a larger company and that would happen you’d be stressed with someone who is trying to pressure you into a decision on something that you weren’t quite clear on — I would literally disappear. I would go for a walk. I would step out and have a coffee. I would remove myself from the stressor so I would have that time to think and people might not always appreciate that, but I guarantee you the decisions you make will always be better. We make our worst decisions when we are under stress.
