Cape Town is a gem of a city. It is a truly multifaceted haven for anyone who visits and those who call it home. Its mixture of vivacious nightlife, provincial charm, and breathtaking landscapes offers something for everyone. It is as romantic as it is adventurous, historic as it is cosmopolitan. In Cape Town, a typical day might look like this: hop on a cable car in the morning and watch the sun come up from the top of Table Mountain, take a relaxing stroll through the Botanical Gardens in the afternoon, and end the day with some fine shopping and dining on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. And if this itinerary sounds too tame for you, adventure seekers will find plenty of surfing, windsurfing, and skin-diving along the coast. There is not much you can’t do in this South African capital. However, don’t think of Cape Town as merely a tourist attraction. All of the city’s wonderful features have roots in its fascinating past and much of Cape Town exists today because somebody had to fight for it. This audio guide offers some pertinent information to help you get around the "Mother City" with ease.

2 Judgy Mums

2 Judgy Mums

We all know those judgy mums, they think their view is the universal view… they’re always right, and annoying. What if we turn that on it’s head and use satire to point the finger at the judgy mums and find insights into parenting by a parody of the all too real 2 judgy mums. Strong language may be used. Becks is on her first marriage, second child, third pregnancy and is climbing the four walls of her shambolic house. She gets her parenting tips at the dog park and is one day hoping to get a dog. Her favourite child is the one that is asleep. Her twitter handle is @theendofhertether. Hen (short for Henrietta) has a boy, a girl and a husband. All three suffer from a rare condition of not-doing-a-f*#king-thing-without-Hen’s-help. She would rather do time in a Bali jail then do craft with her kids. Librivox: Great Pirate Stories by French, Joseph Lewis

Librivox: Great Pirate Stories by French, Joseph Lewis

Piracy embodies the romance of the sea at its highest expression. It is a sad but inevitable commentary on our civilization, that, so far as the sea is concerned, it has developed from its infancy down to a century or so ago, under one phase or another of piracy. If men were savages on land they were doubly so at sea, and all the years of maritime adventure--years that added to the map of the world till there was little left to discover--could not wholly eradicate the piratical germ. It went out gradually with the settlement and ordering of the far-flung British colonies. Great Britain, foremost of sea powers, must be credited with doing more both directly and indirectly for the abolition of crime and disorder on the high seas than any other force. But the conquest was not complete till the advent of steam which chased the sea-rover into the farthest corners of his domain. It is said that he survives even today in certain spots in the Chinese waters,--but he is certainly an innocuous relic. A pirate of any sort would be as great a curiosity today if he could be caught and exhibited as a fabulous monster. (Summary from text)

Light Princess and Other Fairy Tales, The by MACDONALD, George

Light Princess and Other Fairy Tales, The by MACDONALD, George

George MacDonald claimed that he did not write for children, but for the child-like. Some of his longer works are clearly intended for adults, and this fantastic fiction influenced later writers such as G.K. Chesterton, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. But you can find some of his best writing in the stories aimed squarely at children, and these are three of the finest.

The Light Princess. A wicked aunt curses her baby niece so that gravity has no effect on her, and she floats through the air as if it were water. The only way to break the curse is to make the princess cry.

The Giant's Heart. Two children argue and run away to Giantland. There they find out that one of the Giants steals children from the land of men and eats them, but how can they kill the Giant when he has hidden his heart where no one can find it?

The Golden Key. A boy discovers a Golden Key, but cannot find the lock. He meets a girl, and together they search for the land from where the shadows fall, hoping that the key will allow them in. Summary by Clive Catterall)

Mum Says My Memoir Is A Lie

Mum Says My Memoir Is A Lie

In 2015, Rosie Waterland published her first book, a memoir called "The Anti-Cool Girl". The book is about her childhood, her growing up, and her becoming an adult; all with mentally ill, drug and alcohol addicted parents, child protection, foster care, caravans and couches. There were crazy and very difficult times but also some funny times too. Rosie is 30 now, her mum Lisa is now 53. Since the book came out, the one question Rosie is always asked is more than any other is, "Has your Mum read the book?"

Lisa hadn't read it for a while, because her drinking was so bad that she physically or emotionally couldn't. But in 2016, Lisa got sober. She has maintained that sobriety for the longest period Rosie has ever seen and.. she has finally read the book. She has many thoughts.

The first of which is that most of Rosie's memoir is a lie.

Now is their time to talk all about it. In each episode Rosie reads a chapter from the book, and then Rosie and Lisa talk through it - is it all true or false? What really happened? Each chapter becomes a real conversation about the past, present and future for Rosie and Lisa.

Tourcaster - Free Sample - Ieper Walking Tour

Tourcaster - Free Sample - Ieper Walking Tour

The Ieper (Ypres) Salient was a constant focus of activity throughout the course of the Great War - "The war to end all wars". When one hears tales of trenches feet deep in water, and of soldiers struggling uphill through muddy quagmires, with enemy fire raining down upon them, Belgian Flanders epitomises the struggle. Here, muddy patches of barren treeless land were fought over, backwards and forwards for 4 years, with hardly any change in the line of the Western Front, but at massive human cost. On these tours you will see what remains even after 90 years; trenches, craters, bunkers and of course cemeteries, which by nature of the decision made not to repatriate the dead, lie silently and peacefully at the then epicentre of the fighting.

For anyone who has thought about visiting the Western Front to find out more, or needs to put what they know into perspective, these tours are a rare opportunity to do so and see for yourself, at your own pace. The sample Ieper Walking Tour examines the mediaeval town at the centre of the Salient (a bulge in the line which had to be defended on all sides) and introduces the visitor to the major sites, and discusses the role of the town in the war.
