Sargent: A Personal View

Royal Academy of Arts (archive) show

Summary: An evening talk in support of the exhibition 'Sargent and the Sea'. Drawing on personal documents and reminiscences, Richard Ormond, Sargent's great-nephew and Director of the Sargent catalogue raisonne project, traces the story of Sargent's upbringing as an expatriate American in Europe, his early career and successes in Paris, his struggles to establish himself in London, his rise to fame as the greatest Anglo-American portraitist of his generation, and his prolific output as a landscapist.
