Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, Oberhausen, Bochum und mehrere andere große Städte sind Teil dieses Gebiets. Aufgrund der Eisen- und Kohlebergwerke und der Stahlindustrie bildeten sich viele Städte nahe beieinander. Die Lebensqualität war dort zunächst nicht so gut, selbst in den 50er Jahren war die Luft noch voller Ruß und Staub. Heutzutage ist es viel besser, aber selbst damals mochten viele Leute ihre Heimatregion. Hier ist ein kurzer literarischer Text dazu von Max von der Grün, mit dem Titel „Meine Stadt“. Die Stadt, in der ich lebe, ist eine schmutzige, eine staubige Stadt, aber ich lebe gern hier, denn sie gibt mir die Möglichkeit, in ihr anonym zu leben und doch mit ihr, wenn ich will, eins zu sein. Man spricht außerhalb des Ruhrgebietes etwas verächtlich von den Städten an der Ruhr, zu Unrecht, denn auch diese Städte haben ihr Gesicht, wenn sie auch für einen Fremden uniform aussehen sollten. Wenn ich Städte an der Ruhr sage, dann meine ich natürlich die Vorstädte, wo sich manchmal noch dörfisches Leben hält, wie etwa in meinem Stadtteil, wo jeder jeden kennt, wo Bauern seit Jahrhunderten auf ihren Höfen sitzen, wo ihre Kühe und Schafe bis an den Zaun der Kokerei grasen. Manchmal stinkt es nach faulen Eiern, die Abgase der Industrie drücken an die Fenster, man gewöhnt sich daran. Und wenn hier die Sonne an klarsten Tagen doch nicht wirklich scheint, weil die Industrie zwischen Sonne und Menschen ihren Abfall in den Himmel bläst, so sind es doch Sonnentage eigener Art, die Menschen hier sind dafür dankbarer als anderswo für Sonnenstrahlen, und den Wasserschlauch braucht man hier nicht nur, um den Rasen zu spritzen, sondern auch und gerade, um den Staub von Sträuchern und Bäumen zu schwemmen. ----Formal English---- The Ruhr area is a collection of cities in Western Germany, in North-Rhine Westphalia. Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, Oberhausen, Bochum and several other big cities are part of this area. Because of the iron and coal mines and the steel industry many cities evolved close to each other. The quality of life was not so good there at first, even in the 50s the air was still full of soot and dust. Nowadays it is much better, but even then many people liked their home region. Here's a short literary text about this by Max von der Grün, titled „My city“. The city, in which I live, is a dirty, a dusty city, but I like living here, because it gives me the opportunity to live in it anonymously and yet I can be one with it if I want to. Outside the Ruhr area they talk a bit disparagingly about it, wrongly so, because these cities also have their own face, even if they may look the same to a stranger. If I say cities on the Ruhr, then of course I mean the suburbs, where you may still find village life, as for example in my borough, where everybody knows everybody, where farmers have held their farms for centuries, where their cattle and sheep are grazing right up to the coke oven plant's fence. Sometimes there is the smell of foul eggs, the industry's exhaust fumes are pressing up against the windows, you get used to it. And if the sun doesn't really shine on the clearest days, because the industry is pumping their waste into the sky between sun and humans, these are sunny days of a peculiar kind, the people here are more thankful for the rays of sun than elsewhere, and here you don't just need the hose to water the green, but also and especially in order to wash away the dust from shrubs and trees. --------------------------- Lear [...]
