Daily Fill #80: Drum Lessons with Scott – Private Lessons

Drummers I Like Podcast show

Summary:

Welcome to the Monday edition of the Daily Fill with our lead educator Scott Jackson! Every Monday Scott drops into give us a quick drum lesson that we can apply to our playing right now! Let's get started...

Over the next couple of weeks, I wanted to talk about a very subtle and introspective topic. And that is, objectively judging your technique and more importantly your Sound behind the drum set. This week we focus on determining when should you start taking private drum lessons again or for the first time. So when should you? Well, for me it's a very simple and honest question. Can I CHOOSE how I want to SOUND to fit the needs of the music? For instance, Rock music has a different sound required than if you were playing in a Samba troupe from Brazil. If not, then I should go find someone that can teach me.

So when should you? Well, for me it's a very simple and honest question. Can I CHOOSE how I want to SOUND to fit the needs of the music? For instance, Rock music has a different sound required than if you were playing in a Samba troupe from Brazil. If not, then I should go find someone that can teach me.

So let's break down the 3 Primary Learning Stages.

1. Beginners: Someone who has zero experience. You should definitely seek out a private instructor to help you get started.

2. Intermediate: Has been playing for awhile 3 years or even 20 years at times, but still lacks the technical skill to SOUND really good.

3. Advanced: Has been diligently Practicing and Studying for a long period of time possibly up to 10 years or longer. Their SOUND is under control and they have the technical facility to learn musical ideas quickly and is technically superior to the average drummer.

Each stage has different needs, and over the coming weeks, we are going to breakdown the Subclasses for each Primary Learning Stage.

This topic is extremely subtle, and sometimes can make you confront areas of your playing you haven't thought of before. So, just stay with me, and I guarantee you will have a new positive outlook on your Development as a drummer.

Get more from Scott by signing up for this month of Drummers I Like Pro and Learn More Now!
