Daily Fill: The stimulus response gap

Drummers I Like Podcast show

Summary:
Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more!
Today’s quote “ where focus goes, energy flows “ - Tony Robbins

On today's episode, we talk about being proactive with your playing, your career, and your approach to life. We all have those reactive moments, you know, the guy cuts you off at a light and you roll your eyes or raise your hands at the driver. Sometimes it’s those reactive moments that get us punched in the face by the giant muscle man driving that truck who you flipped off. I know that’s a little much but you know what I mean.
The Stimulus-Response gap is the time between the action against you and your response to it. The better we can master this moment in time the better we can handle anything that is thrown at us. One thing I have always struggled with is my lack of patience with trying to learn to new songs on the drums. Sometimes my hands and legs just can’t make it happen and in the past, it would be like me to toss my sticks in frustration. My patience game was always weak growing up and even after learning this principle, practicing it, living it, and even teaching it I found myself having trouble applying it in every chaotic situation that came about.
One thing that helps me navigate through the mess is always keeping the end in mind. In an easy way to focus on your priorities as a person is by thinking about what you want people saying about you at your funeral. I know, it’s morbid… but really think about it. Did you want to be remembered as a guy that worked really hard? Do you want to be remembered as a good parent? How about being remembered for helping your community? Put this into serious consideration as you put together your day to day to-do lists and 1, 2, and 5-year plans. It can really help clarify things for you.
So let’s apply this to our lives right now! Ask yourself… What’s something I consistently have negative reactions to and how can I change work to expand the Stimulus-response gap we have during our typical quick reaction response!
That’s it for today’s episode of the Daily Fill! Tune in next week for more motivation, more guidance and more practical tips that can be applied to your day today!
Do you like my chats? Do you want to take my applications to the next level?
