Summary: Speaker(s): Barry Eichengreen, Ricardo Reis | This lecture will focus on the economic and financial consequences of the “three horsemen” – pandemics, wars and depressions. Professor Barry Eichengreen, University of California, Berkeley, will draw on evidence from the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, World War I, the Great Depression of the 1930s, and World War II. He will look at the economic consequences and specifically at the fiscal and financial consequences, specifically how the resulting debts were managed. The lecture will be followed by comments by Professor Ricardo Reis, LSE and chaired by Professor Erik Berglof, Director of LSE Institute of Global Affairs at the School of Public Policy.
