Summary: Noted Brazilian director Karim Ainouz stops by The Deep Cut to talk with host John Rocha about his latest film, Invisible Life aka The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao. The film is Brazil’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The film is set in 1950 in Rio de Janeiro and centers on the lives of two sisters Eurídice, 18, and Guida, 20, who live at home with their conservative parents. Although immersed in a traditional life, each one nourishes a dream: Eurídice of becoming a renowned pianist, Guida of finding true love. In a dramatic turn, they are separated by their father and forced to live apart. They take control of their separate destinies, while never giving up hope of finding each other. John and Ainouz discuss what personal events in Ainouz’s life motivated him to direct the film and adapt the screenplay from the novel. They also discuss what themes and meanings he wants the viewers of the film to take with them afterwards. They also explore his career and share a few laughs over the process of becoming a director and the hard work it takes to achieve it.
