Summary: <p>in 1969, Native American activists took over Alcatraz and held the island for nineteen months. Though the famous former prison was known worldwide, they argued that they had "discovered it" - just as Europeans had "discovered" America.</p> <p>It was one of the wittiest protests in history, designed to raise awareness about the deplorable treatment of Native Americans. And to a large extent it worked.
