21. Launching & Scaling A Bricks & Mortar Store With Smug’s Lizzie Evans

The Lifestyle Edit Podcast show

Summary: Today on the show, we're talking to Lizzie Evans, founder of much loved London-based lifestyle store, Smug. Lizzie was 23 years old when she started the store. She was freelancing in graphic design in Australia when she got the idea for the business, playing with her style and fine tuning what her visual identity is. Huge success came from her mix of carefully curated antique furniture, stationary pieces from brands like Rifle Paper Co, long before it became the big brand it is today, along with a slew of co-created exclusives with brands that publications and those in the know went crazy for. Instead of opening stores across the city, she launched the Smug website and focused on getting creative about what she could do with one flagship store. We talk about how the business has evolved and what it was like starting a business as a 23 year old with nothing more than optimism and a vision. She talks about some of the challenges she faced after the business’s initial growth spurt, what she’s learnt about delegating and some of the early hiring mistakes she made. We also talk about the power of community in business and why her podcast, How To Curate Your Life, was always about connection, and not about making money.
