Summary: An estimated 2.1 million youth under the age of 18 are arrested in the United States every year. Although the overall rate of youth involved in the juvenile justice system has declined in recent years, more than 1 million cases flow through juvenile courts annually. Today, we focus our attention on learning more about juvenile delinquency and justice by interviewing Dr. Alexandra Cox, a criminologist, lecturer at the University of Essex, and author of Trapped in a Vice: the Consequences of Confinement for Young People. We begin the interview by discussing the history of juvenile justice in the US (21:20), common misconceptions about the juvenile justice system (25:45), and the most pressing issues facing youth in the system (29:00). We then tackle the intersection of race, class, and gender in juvenile justice (32:45) and the school-to-prison pipeline (36:40).
