Upaya Zen Center's Dharma Podcast show

Summary: Series Description: The Song of the Jewel Mirror Samadhi usually known as Hõkyõ Zammai of Zen Master Dongshan (Japanese: Tozan) for whom the CaoDong school is named. The poem refers to the Five Ranks of Tozan. The Five Ranks express the interplay of absolute and relative truth and the fundamental non-dualism of Buddhist teaching.
Episode Description: In this episode, Sensei Genzan Quennell begins his exploration of Tozan’s Song of the Jewel Mirror Samadhi. Looking closely at the opening lines Sensei Genzan asks, “What does it mean to preserve the teachings past down to us from Buddhas and ancestors?” Genzan argues that meeting each person and seeing them as the Buddha is the actualization of the teaching. Genzan shows us that the transmission of the teaching has been an intimate exchange between teacher and student. One that goes beyond words and phrases.
To help keep these podcasts freely available, we hope you will consider making a suggested donation of $25 to our Dharma Podcast Fund.

To access the entire series, please click on the link below:

Upaya Podcast Series: Sesshin: The Song of the Jewel Mirror Samadhi
