Episode 044 "As if! The 1985 special!"

digitalSoup - A Hilariously Geeky Podcast show

Summary: In a very special bonus episode your favorite geeks travel back in time to give you a taste of what digitalSoup would have been like had they been doing a show back in the eighties! It’s an awesome decade when the WWF was king, CD’s were new tech and the biggest movies were starring Stallone and Michael J Fox. Buckle up because we’re taking the kitchen back to 1985 in this time traveling bonus episode to make a vintage batch of digitalSoup! ----more----TECHNOLOGY NEWS With things continuing to change faster than the world has ever seen we’ve had a ton of new technological advancements! This stuff is seriously mind blowing dude!   Symbolics.com With something they are calling a domain name, the company Symbolics Corporation has apparently registered the very first .com domain name. Is that pronounced “Period Com” or “Dot Com”? Big news because up until now we’ve only really seen the .edu domains for educational insitutions. This internet thing seems interesting but maybe a little gimmicky.   Compact DiscsNow these have been around for a bit but they are kind of expensive still. I saw at Radio Shack they had a Compact Disc Digital Audio Player and it comes in at about $400 but for the amazing sound quality it may be worth it! They are even coming out with some portable compact disc players called a discman so you can take your music with you!The band Dire Straits and their album Brothers in Arms, which includes of course their massive hit song Money for Nothing, is the first band/album to sell 1 million copies on CD alone! Of course other artists are on the CD train with David Bowie making history as the first artist to convert his entire catalog to CD. That’s 15 albums plus his 4 greatest hits albums.   Steve Jobs Big news as he quit Apple this past September. Is this the end for Apple? Will the be able to hold on as a company without him?   Microsoft just released Windows 1.0 In an attempt to compete with Apple, Microsoft has released their new Windows line. But it just doesn’t seem like it’s going to work. MOVIE NEWSIt’s been a great year for movies, in fact so good that we thought we’d talk about some of our favorites as we near the end of the year! From Goonies and Back to the Future to Rambo and Rocky sequels it’s been a super rad year at the theater!Back to the Future Rambo: First Blood Part II Rocky IV Goonies Cocoon Police Academy 2 : Their First Assignment A View To a Kill Clue   COMIC’S NEWSUD has a few interesting things he’s been reading including some new books and even a new comic strip that is super fun!Calvin & Hobbes Created by Bill Watterson, this new strip just debuted in November, but it’s so much fun! It’s about a young boy named Calvin  and his stuffed animal tiger named Hobbes. What’s fun is that to Calvin, Hobbes is a real tiger and his best friend. But to the rest of the world Hobbes is just a stuffed animal. Really a cool comic strip that’s often very funny!Crisis on Infinite Earths This series from DC Comics is pretty messed up and seems to be a way for DC to try to reset and streamline 50 years of continuity issues from their comics. Seems like they are trying to wipe out the whole idea of the multiverse but what is crazy it that they seem to be hinting that there could be some pretty major deaths to characters coming, such as Barry Allen/The Flash and even possibly Supergirl!   Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesA small independant comic book company has this new book out called The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! A really awesome story where four turtles and a rat are mutated by some sort of radioactive material and the turtles become Ninjas trained by the rat. Seems to actually be pretty heavily inspired by the Daredevil character but really an awesome premise that will hopefully stick around with more issues.   The Weekly Garnish Nintendo Entertainment System In October the Nintendo Entertainment System saw a very limited release starting in markets like New York City. This new game system is set to compete with Atari for home gaming and looks pretty awesome! It has a gun accessory they call the Zapper Light Gun as well as a robot accessory called R.O.B. which stands for Robot Accessory Buddy! It’s launching with 17 different games available which include 10-Yard Fight, Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Golf, Gyromite, Hogan’s Alley, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Pinball, Soccer, Stack-Up, Tennis, Wild Gunman, Wrecking Crew, and Super Mario Bros.   GHOSTBUSTERS GIVEAWAY- -Follow the digitalSoup Facebook page -Like and Share the giveaway post -Leave a comment on the post saying you’d like to be entered and maybe share your favorite Ghostbusters movie moment! -Winner will be announced on the 10/31 Halloween Episode!   Music Credit Intro Background Music: The Run by Kai Engel. licensed under an Attribution License.   Subscribe on iTunes Listen on Google Play Music Listen on TuneIn Subscribe on Stitcher   Be sure to subscribe to us on iTunes and leave a review, lets us know what you think.  You can reach us at the digitalSoup podcast website, Facebook or on Twitter @thedigitalsoup.  We are also on Instagram so follow us for extra bonus material and show highlights!
